bigger maps

Post by Dead.Rabit »

ive noticed that ive never seen a map larger then 14 x 14.

is there a way to make the maps bigger? / is anyone working on it?

a friend of mine who knows about coding suggested that the map could be scaled up or the units scaled down to make it seem larger. is any of this possible at all?

thankyou =]..
ps sorry but i know very little about the games coding etc. =] ty all

You're welcome.

[To avoid being a complete shit:Some of the limits on map size involve the map compiling tools available. Map file sizes also become involved. There is a new map format in the works that will change things. Also most people don't have the hardware to play such large maps effectively.
There was once a scaled down units thing.]

Quite a few maps are 16x16. There are some (Altored Divide(I think), Altored Earth, Wide Open Combat) that are bigger again. If you cant find any maps bigger than 14x14, your not looking hard enough.

There was an attempt to shrink the units to half size, and hence make maps (and features!) bigger; but it was never supported by the development team, and without that support it could never pick up, because it was a coding change, not a mod; which was a shame, because I thought it was a good change.

Yeah, blame RuneCrafter for trying to capitalize on the grandeur of true epic maps...

I agree that we need bigger maps but there isn't a shortage of big maps. I have found plenty that are at least 16X16. As for 40X40 or larger, we will need really big games for those. It'll be fun when you have a 5 vs 5 or 8 vs 8 but any less then that, I think that the game will get boring and old really quick. I almost always playing 63X63 maps in TA but with never less then 5 people. any less and it was just too slow and drawn out.

Still, I will vote for bigger maps. i would love to see a 63X63, or bigger, map of Europe for example.

i wouldnt, as it turns into massive air wars in wich will cause abusive lag turning the game fast into a non playable 0.10 speed game.
ill stick with the small ones

another good point. most do turn into air battles. i'm horrible with air. i usually dont get it up until im well into the game and then its useless for me. well, kinda. i usually just stick to ground and air.

it also depends on the position. the players closer to the center will stick to mainly land while the players in the rear would stick to mainly air with ground units as support incase the front lines fall.

This is why we need to have the modding option for more realistic aircraft with fuel/range and what not.

as much as it would take away from TA, i think its a genius idea for planes to have a limited range.

Who really cares if it isnt like OTA. This isnt OTA. This is Spring. If you want OTA, play OTA. Plus it was a modding option, not a hardcoded thing. ANd on that point, I think it would be interesting to atleast experiment with.
