Another map I will play, at most, 1 time (although, I don't ever want to download it). 24x24 is, imo, over the limit of reasonable sizes...40x40 is just...universe size.

Good job on the map though...nice to see spring can handle it. I just fear seeing this in action - the likelihood of the game ending due to anything other than crashing, people dying of old age, or suicide is...pretty low.

Come on.
a 40x40 map, with 5 screenshots, and all show a commander in a vallay so nothing further than 50 units away is visible...

Whats that supposed to show?
How a bout a minimap?

holy smokes, I just tried this one out. I really like it.

I hope, that if you do more epic maps in the future we can get some big open spaces. Thank you for making it, I will love playing on it.

Out of curiosity would you consider making a second version with water taking up the low lying areas?

Large maps are great. If someone can remake 2 continents from ota, that would be the pwnage.

I'll have to try this map out.

We discovered that the size limit is not 28x28, but rather 600 or so meg. However, because mapconv can also compile jpegs, we have a way around this. When we use a jpeg instead of a bitmap, the texturemap will be under 600 meg even for a 40x40, so mapconv will compile it.

that means that with the right methods of designing we can have maps bigger than 40x40 right ?

Probably. But the game needs some changes before we can have maps this large. Aircraft rule all on this map, so we would need some sort of range or ammo tag on aircraft, preferably range so you have to build bases closer to the enemy.

Edit: also, Rune, you should fix up the heightmap. It appears to be impossible to get weasels and such across the map.

I would tend to say that maps over 28 x 28 are a bit impractical.

Not if you want to play final frontier without captial ships 30seconds away from reaching any part of the map :)

That would mean a ff map being mostly uniform (i.e. transparent, water, ect) with a few platforms would compress incredibly well as a jpeg...

Would this mean a 80x20 type "planet to planet" (like shoretoshore, only with cescend planets on each side) is possible?

somebody should do a test map with only 1 colour and jpeg compression on it too... so we can see how big in size is actual maximum

i would at least test map what is only 1 colour but size 100 x 100 or MORE :P
