Xanthe Terra (Remake)

Post by Forboding Angel »

A faithful remake of the original with SSMF details, some fog, ambient sounds and more!

Heights, metal amounts, wind amounts are all exactly the same as the original. The typemap that caused many games to be so unbalanced as a result has been removed.

It should be noted that the original texture was badly damaged and artifacted. I spent quite some time shopping it to fix it and I think it turned out quite well.

Recorded video of it...

I 'm not a fan of the specular highlight that the metal spots have... but its a sad thing we have no uniform good looking way to indicate metal spots without F4.

Also the terrain shadows are have a significantly less quality than unit shadows.. why is this? (they are more jagged and shape is simple and jumping around at different zoom levels)

The specular mex spots are only mildly visible if you keep the camera at the default playing angle. That was rather intentional.

The reason terrain shadows don't look as good is because of your ground detail settings. Try setting them higher. 120 is a nice baseline. For taking movies and screenshots (IE, not playing), 300 is a good base.

Thanks for the vid :-D

Apparently I missed some details (didn't realize the original had geos and there is a mistake in the evo ambient player widget (only effects evo)).

I'll put up a v2 tonight.

really lovely, except i agree with floris, the specularity of the metal-containing craters is too jarring. maybe if it was only inside the rim of each crater, but i understand that's a lot more work

I'll just tone them down more. Prolly like half of what they are now.

v2 Changes:
Toned down specular on mex spots
Added lua mexmap config for non-*A games
Fixed errors when playing in EvoRTS
Added geos that were in the original in the same locations

V2 is an improvement indeed!

Already had it set a bit above 120. Jaggedness still stays even when setting 500. The higher the gounddetail the less jumpy when zooming though, but then it needs to be 300+.

Hmm it doesn't do any of this for me. Try setting shadows to 8192 then 4096 then 2048 and see at which step jaggedness appears.

If it's jagged regardless of shadowmap and grounddetail size then that's just plain weird.

Did anyone ever try this with BA/XTA or NOTA? Without the typemap I'd be interested in hearing how it plays.

They can just fine, because every lobby outside of Zero-K lobby properly supports map dependencies.
