My thoughts as a new player on Spring...

Post by Cmdr_Shaffer »

HOLY CRAP!!!   This is AWESOME! I was about ready to pull my hair out, trying to get games to work on Linux--then I stumbled across Spring and all my worries evaporated! (Well, most of my worries--I have a technical question, but that's for another forum) Right now I'm working my way through Balanced Annihilation, NOTA, Tech Annihilation, and Spring 1944--I think that'll keep me occupied for a while ;-) Thanks to all the designers of the wonderful games, and the engine on which to run them!

Oh! Quick semi-technical question about Spring: How portable is it? Explanation: Me and my brother like playing video games over LAN against each other, because we're too terrible to play online, but our playstyles are good against each other--but I have LINUX and he has Windows--can I just pack up all the Spring files on my LINUX and put them on a thumb drive over to his PC and make it work? Thanks! :D

I cannot speak to 'nux I am a doze user but afaik The server is the same. Which is a little java guy. you just run it locally and you are good to go. Provided that port is open on your network. If it isn't might as well just open the port for one of your machines and host a passworded game! Also for ba and ZK there is this thing that is called chickens where units spawn and attack you!

Best of luck out there! Hopefully another 'nux user can help you better shortly!

just open the port for one of your machines and host a passworded game!
No need to open/forward ports: For private internet games just use an empty host/room or relayhost.
can I just pack up all the Spring files on my LINUX and put them on a thumb drive over to his PC and make it work?
No, you need seperate win/linux versions of the engine and lobby. The downloaded maps and game files you can copy though.

You may wish to try to share maps & mods by having the Windows guy make a network share for each, and the Linux guy to mount it into the appropriate directory:
# sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.x.y/maps /home/linuxguy/.spring/maps -o uid=linuxguy
(or similar, depends on your setup)

I can confirm that linux and windows users can play together. What lobby are you using? In Zero-k Lobby you can just start a new battle (passworded is possible too) and you should both be able to join and play together in it without any complications. Two other games that you should really try are Evolution RTS and Zero-K. They can be found at http://www.evolutionrts.info/ and http://www.zero-k.info respectively. Zero-K Has plenty of players (by Spring standards) but Evo has very few.

Good luck!

Hm, did you test that, does it give good performance? I think because of the whole archive scanning file IO thing it might cause very long start times of spring?
