Top 3 TA sites?

Post by Buggi »

Okay, I'm just wondering how much has changed since the dawn of TA 8 years ago (or so). It seems that plannetannihilation is still going strong. tauniverse seems to be in DIRE need of a redesign and I'm not even sure if this site could still be considered a TA site any more with all the advancements made.

What are your thoughts on the top 3 sites, keep in mind membership, visitation and design/upkeep. I want an honest list. :) I'm hoping the responses will have similar sites to link together to form an idea of what are the big ones out there. I don't want 10 responses and 30 different sites, that would show mass chaos in the community. It would be nice to see 10 responses and 5 sites. That I could understand. :D

I have been apart of so many communities and have learned a great deal about how they work and how people use them to their full extent. I do not believe 30 TA sites would do any justice to the fanbase at ALL. But widdle those down to 3 to 5 "hubs" that can specialize and be the anchor for the system as well as host and link to sites of their specility would be a great start to getting as much talent and fans as possible together.

Hence my desire to get your ideas of the top 3.

TAU (which includes UnitUniverse and FU), PA, and either TADesigners or TAFansite, I don't really know which is larger these days. Really, you could substitute either of them for PA, since PA is basically just a file cache for most things these days... it's only got a couple active hosteds, and that's it.

And about the TAU design, well, no one ever wants to help me when it comes to doing colors and graphics for it :( Any suggestions? The code's pretty flexible (it is for me, at least, since I know exactly how it works), most of it's controlled through the stylesheet. It only takes editing of a couple files to rollout a site-wide change. It's just hard to do these changes because no one ever really comments on the damn thing...

For me it's TAUniverse, PlantAnnihilation, and prolly TADesigners (because they had the most recent version of FF for TA engine). I'm not sure where World Domination is hosted because I can't navigate their bloody site, but it also sorta counts.

TAU is the best!

You mixed up TAU and PA in your post Image

My hierarchy would be:
TAU > PA > TAD > TAF

TAU is simply the only active TA supersite. Many of its hosted get a little update from time to time. And its forum are not only the most active, but also the were the more competent people are. Ok, most of the threads are unrelated to TA, but I think it still gets most TA related thread. And with with intelligent reply than any other forums.

PA is dead. It's still a great place to get all the donwload of its myriad hosted. It doesn't matter that the hosted are inactive when you're coming only to grab their goods. But there's maybe only Gundam Annihilation and AA as active hosted. And the PA forums are desert, only populated by the stray n00b, and BlackStar giving the wrong answer everytime.

I wubbed TAD some times ago, but sadly, it didn't survived well the server move, forum change, and estrella leaving. Only WD is still active there. However, it's still the place to go get a few very fine mods such as Final Frontier and Imperial Authority.

TAF isn't as good as those three others, and its forums are populated mainly by nooblets, but its Unit Shop is great, and it got a couple of not-so-bad hosted. Well, ok, only that WW2 reborn, but still.

I think it tells something that Mad TA moved (back) from PA to TAU and that Smoth is asking for a subforum on TAU and that Bidigam and Artalion moved from TAF to TAU.

Does the TAS site count as a total annihilation fan site? If so, where on the list would it fit? We must have one of the more currently active forums.

PlanetAnnihilation is dead. Darkyouth has better things to do, and I'm the only hosted site over there that's still making updates.

Gnome, you own/run TAU?

I'd be up to helping you. It seems it's the highest on the list among the posters right now and as such, it needs the look of THE place to go to for everything TA.

Are you planning anything for SupCom on it?

and TAD really needs to get rid of the popups... :?

Well, I help out as much as I do on the other *universe sites. I don't own it, but I have access to everything (on most days, at least, stupid passwords!). Anyway, if you have suggestions and stuff, go ahead and take it to PM/IRC/some IM/email instead of cluttering your topic with offtopicness.

We have a seperate site for supcom: http://www.supcomuniverse.com (supcomu.com and reallycoolwargame.com also work).

Well, about TAD, Estrella is coming back to fix the forums and the site, i'm still Administrating the message board and we still have lots of active topics, I recently made some additions to the site's message board such as general discussions and TA related discussions.

WD is hosted there as well, but I usually upload the latest on different places such as FU.

PlanetAnnihilation also loads slow. And File Universe isn't Fileplanet, which is a big bonus! Still PA got me all my updates, cavedog units, and maps, some years ago when I got back into TA, and of course it hosts AA of which I am fond.

It would be nice if AA moved from PA to somewhere else so we could abandon in entirely, of course, thats not very likely to happen.

What began as a conflict over the forums, escalated into a war that has decimated a thousand worlds....

Today Spring board had 21 threads with posts since my last visit, and TAUniverse board had 24. Close!

The only qualm over TAUniverses colour scheme is the purple.

this was heavilly offtopic (noticed at TAU news lol) :

i'm suprised MS Zone is dropping Mechcommander 2 ... considering it's not so bad or old ...
also they dropping TA bit strange too ... why simple not wait till Supreme Commander is out and drop it in moment of release or demo ...
let's hope it mean more players come to PW or here to TAS ...

oh well MS was always strange ...

From what I've seen in the multiplayer lobby here, it wouldn't be entirely different, just more cursing on average...

Hmm It seems I had TAD in mind when I talked about a redsign... it's pretty...um... outdated. :)

TAU isn't _bad_ as it much as it needs some TLC.

Okay, so #1 is TAU. I'll keep that in mind.

btw who *owns* that site? or is it just run by hard core fans? :)

Whenever I feel like browsing TA sites, I hit TAD about 5 times as often as TAU...

Annihilated.com had the infamously hideous heavy-blue/heavy-green layout, but that didn't keep it from being a very strong site.
