Theory for upgrading old maps

Post by Targ Collective »

Essentially what the maptools do is combine a variety of images (heightmaps, metalmaps etc) into a Spring map file. In theory it should be possible to reverse the process, extracting the source files from the map. So converting the maps from the old format to the new one should mean a straight decompile under the old format through to a straight recompile to the new format.

This is assuming the new format uses the same source files, or source files that could be converted.

Anyone willing to add to this?

Technicly yes.. how ever geos are now placed on a different image, and it uses new compression aloriths to make smaller files, so it would not be quite as easy as ud think...

also, most map makers would probablie prefer to re-make there maps if they felt they were worth it. I'd certanly be pissed if someone did a quick port of one of my maps that I was planning on redoing to fix its bugs and game play issues.

It would be easyer to just pention for a map to be brought back...

ya it technically is possible, and for that matter a full export of the map terrain is possible using annihilator 1.5

Problem is, the shadows are already drawn in OTA map tiles. It did occur to me that if the sun was positioned correctly in spring that it should look right, but the heightmap is a bit of a beotch to deal with as well, but most likely not undoable.

Hell my new map is using a tile or 2 from C_A_P's evergreen tileset (My favorite tileset from ota). It is doable I believe (Keep in mind I'm not exactly an experienced mapper, but I have learned a lot in the past couple weeks) but agorm make some real good points concerning this.

How about I say that I agree and disagree at the same time :D

For practice I will eventually try this out though.

I think he's talking about the old Spring map format.
