What is Mafia?
Mafia is a party game created in the USSR by Dimitry Davidoff in 1986, modelling a battle between an informed minority (the mafia) and an uninformed majority (the townspeople). Players are secretly assigned roles: either mafia, who know each other; or townspeople, who know only the number of mafia amongst them. In the game's night phase the mafia covertly 'murder' a townsperson. During the day phase, all of the surviving players debate the identities of the mafia and vote to eliminate a suspect. Play continues until all of the mafia have been eliminated, or until the mafia outnumber the townspeople. A typical game starts with three townspeople a doctor a cop and two Mafiosi.

The rules of the game are extremely simple but the game can become extremely deep depending on the players playing.
Since the game is all about human to human interactions where one must fool others into beleiving him there are many guides about different maneuvers and in general the attitude and conduct one should adopt in order to seem believable in general and in specific roles as well.

The game has a competetive scene with competitions, ranking, win/lose ratios etc..
It also has a sandbox mode where more then 100 different roles are available when creating a game setup.
We are talking about roles such as the fool whos goal is to actually get lynched by the village during the day or the lyncher who wins by making the village lynch a certain player.
A voodoo lady who picks a word and anyone who says it during the day dies.
Silencers that prevent a player from talking during the day.
werewolves, anarchists, ninjas, hookers, mimics, amnesiacs, sherifs, insane cops and a shit ton more roles all with special rules and interesting winning conditions.

To play all you have to do is register with an email and you are good to go.
I suggest using chrome since sound is bugged with Firefox ATm, which sometimes prevents you from noticing a game started if you are alt-tabbed or on a different browser tab.
I strongly reccomend to at least try this game.
It is a text based browser game but no, it is not fucking crap.

For those interested here are a few common terms that are often used during games.

1)If someone claims a role, a cop for example, during the day and another claims cop after him that is a CC-counter claim.
Uncc'd means someone claimed a role and nobody counter claimed, meaning that player is clear and can be USUALLY trusted to actually be that role.

2)MYLO-mislynch and lose.
If you have 6 players, 4 townspeople and 2 mafia, and the town makes a mistake and lynches a townsperson instead of a mafioso during the day, and then the mafia of course kills someone during the night, you will be left with 4 people of whom 2 are mafia and thus lose the game(when mafia is equal to the amount of towns people its a game over).

3)WIFOM.
*a play characterized by an infinite regress of reverse psychology. This means it could be reverse psychology, or reverse reverse psychology, or reverse reverse reverse psychology, etc. In the game of mafia, a play can be a statement made in chat, or it can be a vote made during any meeting.
*the infinite regress of reverse psychology itself; in other words, the thought process which is either a cause or an effect of such a play.
Exmple:
A mafia fakeclaims cop, and as part of her fakeclaim she releases a fake report saying that another player is sided with the village. Later on, she is found to be mafia and lynched, but her mafia partner is still alive. The player she reported on could be mafia, and the fake report was intended to make him look less suspicious in the eyes of the town. However, he could actually be a villager, and, anticipating that she might get lynched, the report was actually intended to make him look like mafia in the eyes of the town to ensure he is lynched and the mafia wins. Or it could be that he's mafia, and she anticipated she might get lynched, she wanted to town to think that the report was intended to make him look like mafia in the eyes of the town so they would lynch him, so the town avoids lynching him and mafia wins.

i played a similar board game (BSG*) a lot with friends, and the guessing game can be fun - although probably not as much as online since you can't see facial expressions (and obviously you're playing with strangers)

*BSG (BattleStar Galactica) is a lot more than just the guessing game, although that part of gameplay kinda sucks

Online play has its advantages.
You can see who said what throughout the game and see exactly who claimed what and who voted what at any point in time.
There are also small things you can do with the interface to trick others.

there is of course a huge community around this game so you can play any setup at any time and you can even play multisetup games where there are several possible setups and the players must find out which one they are playing.

I've tried mafia a couple times online. I prefer it in real life. I'm not as good at dishonesty when everything I've ever said is recorded. I get a bit obsessive pouring over logs. I had some fun as a villager, but I just find the in person version less stressful and more fun over all.

I agree, although I have absolutely no poker face. But like everything, it's always better IRL.
