Grouping doesn't work?

So I just played my first game in a few months...

When I select a unit or several units and then press ctrl+1, no group is formed. I was informed last game that this is a bug. Is there a work-around to this, or how can I put units in a selectable group? I use groups so much

Any other bugs like this that I should know about?

Same here on my first .85 game yesterday. Haven´t looked for a solution yet.
