The Archie Sonic Comics

Post by SanadaUjiosan »

I imagine many of you here will think they're silly, and they are for the most part, but I've recently come across an extensive collection of the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie in the '90's. I adored these things as a kid, anxiously got them each time a new one came out, and traced the hell out of a lot of the covers.

When I got a little older, around 10 or 11 I think, I stopped getting them mostly because the stories started to get a little weirder. The last issue I got, which is ironically the only one I still have, was them going into space.

Did anyone else read these at all? To be clear, here's a cover of one of them (this was the first one I ever got!)

i have quite a few unusual comics from the 1980s... i would imagine i would have bought a sonic comic if i had seen it; i was a big fan of the games back in the day.

probably the best stuff from collecting comics that i held onto were the first 10 spawn comics in near-mint condition... no clue as to the value though. also the original ghost rider series in slightly worse condition

these days if i'm going to read something like a comic i generally go straight for graphic novels; recently read "black hole" by charles burns that was originally a 12-part series and enjoyed it muchly. the "bone" series is really good too; aimed a bit more at kids i guess but the story and plot and characters are extremely engaging

lol, that is awesome. I remember there was a crossover comic once with Sonic and Sabrina the Teenage Witch (another Archie series). Never got it though... I think you had to order it or something. The gas station I got mine from never had it at least.

I'm going to try and read as much of these comics as I can. The writing is pretty awful, just what you'd expect out of a for-kids serial from the early '90's. Awful catchphrases and generic one-liners. But I remember later on the story arcs get at least somewhat interesting. I always loved when Sonic and Knuckles got mechanized.

I did read a number of the old Sonic comics, I didn't own many but a friend did and even back then I was a notorious insomniac, so I filled the margins in most evenings with reading whatever I could obtain. I remember some build up to a showdown with Robotnik resulting in his death, and then some later discussion of how the humans came to oppress Mobius...

I was too young to really appreciate or retain any of the story's elements. I honestly adored the comics mostly for the art. I was a lot more interested in art and drawings back then. Looking back through the covers, I realized what an enormous impact the cover art had on my "style" and tastes. I still love it. The cover image i attached in the original post is a great example of what I love.

I learned to draw Sonic mimicking the style of the covers, and I honestly drew Sonic on the back of probably 90% of my worksheets in elementary school. To this day I can still draw his head just as well as I could back then. I drew Knuckles a decent amount too, and Tails as well although I could never do a really great Tails.

You're right though, Robotnik does die at some point. The final issue I got was actually an awesome cliffhanger, in that like the final page was Robotnik showing up and everyone being like "wtf!" Kind of funny I didn't pursue it anymore with that, but maybe it was the beginning of my cynicism being like "are they really going to pull this shit?"
