Ashap Plateau Old and New

Thought I'd have go at a conversion, I remember this as an excellent small map, where I learned to expand or die.

I will add the metal marks for nostagia value, and I really would like some matching recalaimable features. Fortunately it looks like we are making progress there.

I have only one major complaint, there is a lot of spikes down below, ground units have trouble navigating the spikey bumps...

And perhaps the sky should look more like this?

Image

or like Martian Desert which did an excellent job at making the map appear dusty and very mars like...

The sky does look impressive already, maybe a bit off with the OTA feel or realistic feel, whatever you prefer :)

Ah... you spotted the spikes.

One of the features about that map was the bumpiness of floor, the major impact of which was lack building space for large buildings down there.

Due to the way spring works the original heightmap was not bumpy enough to produce the same limitation, which is important to the character of the map.

I do understand how you feel and I will work on a better solution.

I am not sure about blue skies and white clouds on a marsian landscape.

In truth there are some much bluer pictures of ther sky on mars, I just like the deep red sunset colouring.

The plateaux are as high as the can be while still allowing vehicles to climb the slope.

Red sky?

Post by Pxtl »

Apparently the Martian sky is actually generally blue. There is some controversy around this, and a lot of conspiracy theorists - the belief is that NASA releases pictures of mars with a red-channel way up because otherwise Mars looks just like a random patch of Arizona desert, and thus the pictures wouldn't be all that impressive. There have been many pictures released with a blue sky, then re-released red-tinted.

Heh, not to disapoint you but I had an AI build there anyway :P

Pxtl is right, there have been pics with blue skies released, even crazier was plant life visible from the satelite pictures! either that or something that makes it appear like it...weird...the mission brought more questions than anwers...

I do care about the science facts, I like the red sky and moody dark clouds for artistic reasons.

It's not meant to be impossible to build factories on the floor, just not easy. I will release a version with a different height map if I can make it kinder to the pathfinding and but still harsh on building.

A big screen shot link featuring cruelty to JCAI.

I have a new version with less spikes, but had a thought about what hurts the path finding so much. So I want to try a slightly different way before I commit this one.

Sorry but its butterscotch in colour, it can have whisps of blue at certain times of the morning or at dusk but this is dependant on water ice concentrations in the upper atmosphere, but that screenshot posted above closely aproximates how mars would look if you stood there.
Sorry to say there is no controversy about the colour of the martian sky except the usual crap you get from ignorant un-educated peple who are unable to appreciate or accept things as they are, like those nut cases who think the moon landings are fake,, these people should be locked up just because they are so unbelievably stupid.

EDIT rofl,, gnome we must have posted at the same time,,

The Lockheed X-22A antigravity fighter disc fleet, equipped with Neutral Particle Beam directed-energy weapons, and capable of effecting optical as well as radar invisibility, is deployed for worldwide military operations from the new U.S. Space Warfare Headquarters.
