Portal 2
Does anyone have it yet?
My skidrow release crashes randomly but I played a few chapters allready and it looks really good.
Some nice new stuff and even more black humor.

Pre-Ordered the PS3 version and played about 4 hours of it yesterday... had to stop to let my wife use the TV for a few hours...Machete234 wrote:Does anyone have it yet?

Liking it quite a bit so far... tried to play co-op with my brother-in-law but he couldn't figure out how to wave on the Mac/PC version so we couldn't do that, he said he'd hit up the web and figure out how to do so today... it was fun to see all my steam friends' statii on the PS3.
The one thing I have really liked over the first one is that (at least in the part I've played) they have gotten rid of a lot of the "platforming" stuff... you still have to jump and this is part of working out how to get through levels but I haven't died yet from jumping wrong and missing a platform or not opening a portal fast enough or whatever... I assume that they will bring back the rage-inducing elements once I've gotten past the "learning the ropes" portions of the game.
Re: Portal 2
So...
Aside from playing the campaign in co-op are there any other multiplayer modes?
Like once i pass the campaign is there anything else to do?

I didn't bother reading up on it ahead of time for fear that I would spoil something.Gota wrote:So...

edit: Only co-op but Apparently there's going to be the option of people making there own levels (likely steam version only) so if they make that part good enough you could end up with the "nearly endless" number of levels you get in Little Big Planet... though hopefully fewer "ride" levels...

Re: Portal 2
Pretty hefty pricetag for such a short game.
Re: Portal 2
I think I'm seeing the "optimal completion time" at around 16 hours if you include the single and co-op compains... and that's not including whatever "challenge" levels might be unlocked after beating the game (the first one had them, I assume this one does too) and whatever replay value/user generated content that you gain access to by owning the game.DavetheBrave wrote:Pretty hefty pricetag for such a short game.
so $70/16=~4.38, at that price it's about the same as seeing a movie on opening day... well, seeing 6 movies opening on opening day but paying for them all at once. So yeah, early adopter tax applies.
Re: Portal 2
I'll wait for the inevitable xmas sale. Im not the kind of gamer who's in a rush to pick things up at launch.
Re: Portal 2
59.99 + tax technically, I just rounded up.smoth wrote:70$, are you serious?
Re: Portal 2
rofl $70 for a pretty much single player game with a short lifespan.
I thought Blizzard were greedy but heres comes Valve trying to take the cake... (not a lie)

Re: Portal 2
I'll agree it's high but it's actually about par for the launch price of video games in Canada... annoying given that our dollar is stronger then the US$ right now...Otherside wrote:rofl $70 for a pretty much single player game with a short lifespan.

Re: Portal 2
Than <- :/
I don't give a shit that is the price of a full title and it isn't.

Precisely how much play time do you expect from a full title?smoth wrote:Than <- :/

edit:
value is all messed up...
- it takes me about 4-8 hours to read a book I pay $15 for
- I pay $15 to see a newly released movie (or wait and pay $30 for the bluray) which I enjoy for about 2 hours
- Ultima 5 cost like $35 when it came out but took 100+ hours to beat
- An Multplayer RTS or FPS has nearly infinite replay value
- people pay hundreds of dollars for original pieces of art or a couple bucks to look at the art in a museum but they both get to appreciate the value of the are equally
- I have to pay $100+ for an ebook reader in order to have the privilege to pay 15$ for an insubstantial version of a book I can take out of the library for "free" (technically payed for in part by my taxes)
- In japan I once saw a vending machine with 3 sizes of cokes all for the same price.
- people spend $30+ for pretty coffee table books that just site there and look pretty
- I payed over $100 for my prom night between purchasing tie and buying my date her corsage and meal, and all I got out of it was a "happy memory"
- The video game I just bought for $70 will be worth $35 in about a month and the only difference is that it will be less new
Re: Portal 2
torrenting....gonna be a fun play through..XD
IN most RTS and FPS you have high re-playability cause you can play online with modes that are very replayable like deathmatches or online skrimishes in rts...
This...if you only have a short single player does not live up to the industry standard.

happy memories, sinbadev?
Would you mind selling me a copy?
ALSO: Valve still got it, and yet wastes it. Some of the gags are hillarious if you get the background. Sarcasm within cynism, within missantrohpy- can make a game completely out of prefabs and some good writers and some voice-acting can make it alive. Wish i could do such singleplayer...

Re: Portal 2
Dynasty wariors gundam 2 >200hrs in still have not beaten the power of bonds maybe cleared 15 stories and only fully leveled char.
Same price all single player
If I started counting online play, that number would skyrocket

Re: Portal 2
You can't compare grind to storyline and completely different voice acting and art on every stage... also I've unlocked 10% of the achievements in Portal 2 after 4 hours of play so if you count "perfect completion" as part of play time then it's actually more like a 40 hours game.smoth wrote:Dynasty wariors gundam 2 >200hrs in still have not beaten the power of bonds maybe cleared 15 stories and only fully leveled char.

Also, I played DW:G2, it's not even a real story it's like,
1) picture of anime character and a word baloon, repeat 10 times,
2) mash the same button over and over again until you build up your super attack, then repeat until you beat the boss
3) spend experience/money on upgrades
return to step 1), repeat this pattern until you get an actual cut-scene
Re: Portal 2
Different strokes for different folks. Some games are meant to be experienced like movies, or like a season of a TV show. Each piece of content is unique, there's lots of acting and production values, and you work through it in about 11 hours - which is about the same length as a 13-episode TV season.
Other games include more gameplay content, but not actually more *content*. Just more stuff to work through.
I love the latter for multiplayer games, the former for singleplayer ones. Different strokes for different folks. For a single-player game, I want to get through it quickly and experience the story and trying everything new and fresh. For multiplayer, give me every possible permutation on your main principles.

If you can provide the technology to extract it from my mind I would definitely sell you a copy of my memories of prom night for $100.PicassoCT wrote:happy memories, sinbadev?

Re: Portal 2
Im sure it would be possible to include some sort of competition based mode of play in portal to extend its re-playability...Pxtl wrote:Different strokes for different folks.
