Stratagus Engine + Games

Post by Machete234 »

Stratagus is a 2D RTS game engine that supports starcraft and warcraft 2 if you have the original CDs.
But it also has games made from scratch like these:

http://commanderstalin.sourceforge.net/
http://stratagus.sourceforge.net/games.shtml

Maybe it is easier to make an RTS game with it than to start a spring project that obviously needs a lot of time and work.

Has anybody tried to make something with that engine?

spring really doesn't take that long. with all the examples out there some one can make a fully 3d mod or game in a day (assuming you already have the content for it).

The real time consuming part of spring is giving it more than the average TA style rts, like gui, custom unit functions, game modes, gadgets. These are the thing that generally frustrate people when they start modding, b/c they have all these 'unique' ideas for a game, but most of them will take a lot of work and some compromise on the idea, and some are just impossible.

not a bad engine for simulating 15 year old games, but TA's restricted 'true 3d' looks better than sprites imo.

So if you want pretty much everything different youre pretty screwed?
Like harvesting ressources with vehicles etc.

Depends. If you have some really crazy ideas, you will need to learn lua and write it yourself.

In some cases though you can practically just drag and drop widgets or gadgets that have already been written. Harvesters for example have already been done in Conflict Terra.

Although, regardless of what engine you use, it will take a substantial time commitment to really make something nice. Good games don't come out of just anywhere you know  .

Yeah if you have totally novel concepts making them with that engine won't be easy either.

Actually ct already does that, all you would need to do is take and modify the gadget.
