spring randomly freezing for ~10sec

I played spring for a couple months on ubuntu 10.04, i was able to play with default settings, and even increase some of the details. about 1 month ago i started getting a strange lag that would stop the game for about 10 seconds, during which 2 seconds of ingame time passed, and the screen froze. At first i thought i might be getting some hardware issues, so i turned options down, lowered the detail, etc. Nothing changed, game would still freeze at random. Anyhow, removed ubuntu 10.04, formatted the partition and freshly installed ubuntu 10.10. Installed spring from the "ubuntu software center", downloaded BA V7.19, and DSD. Random freezes are still there.

I'm not exactly sure how to identify the problem... I assumed changing the display quality would make an obvious difference, but it doesnt seem to. I don't notice a particular action triggering the freeze either.

It doesn't really affect gameplay, but it is extremely annoying.

Maybe you've seen something like this and have a solution? Know a way to help me figure out what is causing it? any help would be appreciated.

system: Ubuntu 10.10, AMD Athlon 3200+, nVidia GeForce FX550, 1GB ram

A while back I had a harddrive fail on me. Before it actually did though it froze up anything I was doing for 10-60 seconds, clicked a few times then spun up again iirc. Might not be the same thing but its the closest I've ever come to that description.

only thing is, why would it only affect spring? seems that if it were the harddrive it would also freeze up other applications.

maybe you're computer is getting to hot?

this hangs mostly come from hardware-problems... maybe try an differnt graphics driver.


dmesg could help you too, maybe the kernel gives some hints, where it hangs.

Does spring hang detection get triggered? It should show up in infolog.

spring hang-detection is a windows only thing (it makes use of some windows API thing.. guess something similar would be possible under linux too, but ... well we don't have it )

It it's online it could be just lag. I've been having a heck of a time trying to play on the relayhosts. Does this happen in offline play?

offline only. i stopped playing online in case it would affect others gameplay.

computer was having some problems on startup, not loading correctly for 2-3 startups. so thats fixed now by removing nvidia 173 driver, and xorg.conf. tired to launch spring thinking maybe itd be fixed too... and wow!

no color on the map, constant lag...

the problem is perhaps simpler to solve, but completely prohibits gameplay.

aehm.. you removed the nvidia driver and are now trying to play with the mesa one....
no-go!

i hate to have to say that, but i know i would just have to post again so... yeah, you need an nvidia driver.

spring wont even completely launch... a black square fills up ~800x600 in the top left then everything is frozen.

what GFX card is it? (infolog does not contain that info, dies too early)

usually GFX problems can be solved by a newer or an older driver (try latest and one that was new when your card was new).
