Kernel panic won allow a game to start

Post by cannonballsimp »

Hi there

I┬┤m a new Ubuntu user, having some trouble with Kernel Panic. If I start a game (with bots) from the Spring Lobby, the graphics load, the countdown begins, and then the game immediately announces that I have won. A similar thing happens when I try and start a game after running spring.exe:

1) the Spring GUI loads,
2) I click ┬┤Test Game┬┤,
3) I select skirmish
4) I click ┬┤Run┬┤
5) I get returned to Ubuntu.

the mod selected in both cases was KP3.6 (I downloaded 4.0, (this filename: Kernel_Panic_4.0_Including_Spring_0.81.2.1_Installer20_99mb) thinking it might clear things up, but when I attempted to extract it, the file displayed in Archive Manager was <1MB. That can┬┤t be right.)

help would be appreciated. Please direct your most patient, former-windows-user-tolerant admin to my post!

thanks

For KP single player, start spring directly and choose kernal panic and any map then click test. You'll get the singleplayer menu for it.

About that menu. It's annoying, large, not very well laid out yet useful and simple. Make it smaller and better presented in terms of not having the buttons floating randomly everywhere and it's all good.

"Using mod archive Kernel_Panic_3.6.sd7"

That's outdated! 3.6 indeed had issues!

Get 4.0!

See this thread: http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=22370

Then get http://jobjol.nl/1684 - Zipped Mod, Maps, and Launcher
Unzip it, putting mods and maps in the appopriate place and throwing away the rest.

I wrote the argument to Spring.Restart wrongly in KP 3.6 and so it fails. However, it should have created a file named "Kernel_Panic_script.txt" that you can pass to Spring as a parameter. Doing that manually each time being inconvenient, upgrading to KP 4.0 is still advised.

Make sure the bot is "Kernel Panic AI" or "Fair KPAI", and make sure the bot is not allied with you.

Next time I reformat my hard drive I'll have to install Ubuntu since it seems they can't get right. (3.6 is a year old!)

Hm. I tried installing the update (by unzipping the file Kernel_Panic_4.0) but attempting to run Kernel_Panic_4.0_Launcher failed. Error message attached.

I┬┤ve decided to uninstall Spring and Kernel Panic and start again from scratch. So, I┬┤ve downloaded this file:

Kernel_Panic_4.0_Including_Spring_0.81.2.1_Installer20_99mb

How do I install it? When I double-click it, it (ostensibly) opens in Archive Manager, but what is displayed there is a folder called KPL which is <1MB. Kernel_Panic_readme.txt (also attached) just says ┬┤just click next, leave all at default, and you┬┤ll be set.┬┤

What am I doing wrong?

thanks

You run Ubuntu, right? So don't try launching windows exe, duh.
  • Follow this link: http://jobjol.nl/1684
  • Get Kernel_Panic_4.0.zip
  • Unzip it
  • Delete Baczek_KPAI_1.2.zip
  • Delete Kernel_Panic_4.0_Launcher.exe
  • Delete Kernel_Panic_readme.txt
  • Put /maps/* into err, I think it's /~spring/maps/
  • Put /mods/Kernel_Panic_4.0.sd7 into err, I think it's /~spring/mods/
  • Run Spring
  • Pick Kernel Panic 4.0 as mod
  • Pick any map
  • Commander script
  • Get menu
  • Pick skirmish
  • Click easy, then duel, then run
