Idea: Fog of War
I've noticed Spring doesn't have fog of war. A fog of war lua widget could be made from CA's Night widget. The night widget darkens the map and gives units searchlights. The widget could be tweaked so the radius of the light would be centered on the unit, and would be the same size as the unit's vision (Line of Sight) range. Units with radar, like spyplanes and radar towers, would have huge huge circles of light to show their radar range.

Don't blame the OP.
We'll just keep getting this request until the end of time because Fog of War should be enabled by default like every other RTS in the world.

Re: Idea: Fog of War
Not really because it kills FPS. Maybe if there was a less expensive implementation.
Re: Idea: Fog of War
The normal Spring LOS doesn't work with shadows, has an annoyingly slow refresh rate, and takes a large bite out of FPS.
I'm just wondering, would a LUA implementation work any better for any of these problems?

Re: Idea: Fog of War
I think I posted a screenshot somewhere of the graphical refresh being slower then the actual los refresh.
edit: Ok, found it.

Unless ca changed an option for faster refresh.

Re: Idea: Fog of War
I always use fog of war but never same performance drops. Maybe because I'm playing on rather low settings.

Re: Idea: Fog of War
In my eyes FOW is too imporant to sacrifice it for performance. Better tell newcomers who complain about bad performance how to disable FOW (if they really want that). An RTS game without FOW is like... dunno... its like... damn, I think you know what I mean.
Re: Idea: Fog of War
its not, if you constantly toggle los view on and off you will see how that will give you faster updates to itGoogle_Frog wrote:afaik slow refresh rate is refresh of engine los.
Re: Idea: Fog of War
We really really need to get shadows + F.O.W. working. The slow refresh rate isn't a deal-breaker, nor is the performance drain - if you can't afford it, just turn it off. But losing the shadows is just a killer.

Re: Idea: Fog of War
I disagree. As pretty shadows are, FoW is more important. There were thousands of RTS games before shadows were invented and people played them fine and they all had FoW.Pxtl wrote:losing the shadows is just a killer.

Fog of war is invaluable, purely out of an informational point of view, nevermind the polish, does a flash appearing out of nowhere when you have no radar look professional? We already have next to no half decent radar coverage UI, just a colour map that isnt labelled, explained, or intuitive, hidden behind an arbitrary keyboard key

Well at least in CA it's in the menu.AF wrote:hidden behind an arbitrary keyboard key
Re: Idea: Fog of War
Speaking of polish, a better reveal than *pop* *a wild Flash Tank appears!* is needed. Some kind of quick little fade-in/fade-out animation would be really, really nice.AF wrote:Fog of war is invaluable, purely out of an informational point of view, nevermind the polish, does a flash appearing out of nowhere when you have no radar look professional? Which is why Im shocked that the UI kits so far have failed to add toggles for things like the metalmap overlay etc. They dont need to be big, theres no reason they cant be at the top next to the resource bars and the menu button.
Prod foreboding, Im sure he'd like that idea very much and spearhead itPxtl wrote:Speaking of polish, a better reveal than *pop* *a wild Flash Tank appears!* is needed. Some kind of quick little fade-in/fade-out animation would be really, really nice.
