Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
I was talking to noruas on facebook the other day, but somehow he managed to completely circumvent a discussion on whats going on with xta. Personally, I have been out of the loop lately, but now that I am expanding my epeen by a few cores and by about 89 square cm of steel that should change.
Basically, I am looking at the xta forum, and saying wtf is happening to xta. A few months ago I was working on making a new xta website, as well as revamping the gui. I intend to continue this work, and hopefully close all the lose ends on xta (like why the hell are there suddenly 2-3 bugfix forks of xta?).
Also Where's Waldo? Or rather Noruas? Is the king dead? If so, I would like the people who are currently independently developing xta to contact me. XTA is too nice of a game and too promising of a project to let it get frayed and killed (which seems to be what has happened here). The clans are dying. I want to unify the playerbase and contributors to turn this around. This, and injecting new technology into the game to modernize it should make it the "new shiny ba with better gameplay and gfx for my modern pc" that is the MTR on this forum.
Okay I read this over and it sounds like a bunch of jack. Basically, in about 2-3 sentences, explain whats wrong with xta (because clearly there is aids somewhere) and explain a solution. Expect results within the next few fortnights (as I am still recovering from financial crisis)

Dgun com + survive fucked the competitive game to the point I stopped caring about the outcome of a single game.
People cry when I host with morph disabled/kill all coms.
Particle fx now mean I cannot see my own Dgun is the majority of mid/large games.
Fixing com retardation, and reducing the particle spam would be 2 huge steps in fixing things.
Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
what pintle said and an influx of noobs (and I mean people who share more in common with the average snail that the rest of humanity) has made a lot of my recent games pretty annoying

Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
all very good information. i have about 3 pages of graph paper filled with various commentary from this subforum.
seeing as I have delayed getting a graphics card I can do some performance testing on my integrated chip. Interestingly, luaui in xta eats a large amount of fps.
anyway, what would people like to see for xta on the development side of things? I can set up and svn like ca, or it can possibly be more private. however i think we need a better team as supposed to a person responsible for xta if we are going to fix it. secondly, what sort of online community structure would feel "right"? forums? social network with clans and such? publishing platform that is less structured?

Personally i think lots of things are wrong with xta gameplay, and named many of them on another thread. The thing is that such modifications would make xta play very differently, and people won't support it.
People have been nice to me, and i agree with some of the ideas of xta (micro, not mass), so i'll keep playing xta on the short term.

Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
the thing with th e particles is really quite stupid sometimes. its annoying if you can not see the trail of missles (which effectively means you can not see the missle)
another new thing i did not like was the overcharge function for mine layers, imo does not fit.
i do like the amphi boats though, nice units.
another thing that is annoying but all spring games are plaqued by this: how long it takes players to ready up and start a game. i do not mind waiting but you would think that most long time players have all the popular maps. sadly waiting longer often means that a 1v1/2v2 game grows to some large clusterfuck that takes even longer to ready up and in the end i often feel like my effort had no impact on the game and then its just so medicore and i go play quake. sometimes i just think why am i once again waiting for some players to ready up if i could be doing something else in this time?
for the autohosts i want a function like !list maps all players have
Also, where are the autohosts hosted and does this have impact on ping times? Or is it just player to player distance? It feels like lately ping times (in spring) have gone up a lot for me and thats sooo annoying if you want to dgun something or retreat a unit and the action is delayed.

to a point yes.Dgun com + survive fucked the competitive game

Some people ultra rage when they dont win and will blame it on the nearest new player. Can be a complete new player or a high rank who is new to the mod, they still get raged at and insulted the same.Babbles wrote:what pintle said and an influx of noobs (and I mean people who share more in common with the average snail that the rest of humanity) has made a lot of my recent games pretty annoying
Im sure we could get a more sizable playerbase if post-game was just "gg" rather than 10 minutes of whining/raging.
Also what pintle said is true

Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
Oh man the logic here is awesome. Old players dont want to play cause of noobs. Noobs dont like to play cause they get screamed at. There are hardly enough players for team games anyway. And people coming from other *A mods also note they get yelled at.
GG.

Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
There are ways to fix that. Just that no one seems to care enough.
Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
In XTA people have a tendency to whine no matter what, it doesnt depend just on newbs playing
For example:

When you're a gold star with over 10k minutes of XTA game play, and have had plenty of hints, tips etc, and you STILL make a kbot lab and send a constant stream of peewees 1 by 1 at the enemy's llt, that is when I get annoyed.
I have plenty of time for new players, espciailly if they actually listen. But when people just ignore advice time after time...
Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
Either accept that team games will always have such players and stop crying or just play 1v1s or small games with familiar players..

I think I'm the oldest player still playing actively now (?) and I would never be against any new players no matter what skill level.Beherith wrote:Oh man the logic here is awesome. Most xta players dont mind either. Sure they might joke around if someone is totally shit but they dont insult them. But all it takes is one guy to scream at you and you arent really going to be coming back..
@JohannesH
The two replays you posted are people complaining about losing not about noobs so not really an issue?

Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
hmm... i didn't really mean it like that; i just always sort of got the impression that many XTA players would prefer to have "pro" opponents / teammates rather than noobs, and i don't blame them for it to be honestBut all it takes is one guy to scream at you and you arent really going to be coming back..

and i certainly didn't make a conscious decision like "omg never again"... it was more of a worry that my presence in the game might spoil someone else's fun and waste their time
XTA is fun! my point i suppose is that if there were more games, with a better mix of skill amongst the players, i'd feel more at home.

I wish people would read what I put.

You mean the:
"Don't build heavy fusion"
"Build medium instead"
part.

Re: Drama thread maybe? Not sure what to call this...
actually in my experience XTA community is alot more forgiving on nubbyness than BA. the noobs of which babbles speak really, genuinely are mentally retarded and indeed do shit like dgun their allies, build no units, or build units then send them into battle in single file, fail, and ragequit. unfortunatrly XTA has sort of become the 'troll mod' atm so you get alot of this shit. genuine new players who want to learn and listen to their allies are usually treated well.Beherith wrote:Oh man the logic here is awesome. XTA itself does have a horrific learning curve however: more so than BA, a single good XTA player can overpower multiple noobs with ease because of the micro + commander nature of t1 and this can be frustrating when the teams are balanced by rank, not by skill. the noobstars babbles reffers to make autobalancing very difficult.
