games with less players vs games with a lot of players

Post by Machete234 »

What do you prefer and why?

My impression is that people love games with 16 players but why?
You can just spam a few t1 units and often thats it.
So you will use about 10% of the game's potential, with a small army you will also use just one strategy: send them to the front.
Its not very challenging, it seems death match like to me.

When you play 1v1 or 2v2 you will have to build a lot and you will have to win with a good strategy.
Sometimes Im surprised what strategy people try or how they manage to win.
(I watch the replays when I lose).
Its always a great experience, I get real challange and in every game I learn a lot.

Oo actually in big team games your more likely to use much more varied strategies than in small games and especially 1v1s(in BA)..

No. People like big games because they enjoy the opportunity to play a couple minutes before getting flattened.

That's the exact attitude in their heads when really, it's just them being unconfident. They don't like being challenged.

Yes but they will wait about twice as long than they play for the server to fill.
So that makes it more boring.

Only the ~3 best players will survive and get to an interesting stage of the game and all the others can do is watch them.
Or just leave and next game do the same again.
This game mode doesnt make you a better player very fast.

No.

I prefer 3v3, 4v4 and 5v5 to all other game types because i like to work with other players. I find playing alone in a 1v1 is pretty boring

Well 1v1 Is usually much more challenging since It is all about descision making rather than allied victory which is more random since You can never cooperate with another player as effecienty/as fast as with yourself :),which means sometimes youll win cause your random combination of forces and actions was better than theirs as oppose to 1v1 where Potentially the game is decided only because of intentional calculations and decision making.

 the term you are looking for is noob roulette.
1v1 is fine and all but ie 3v3 is fun because of the extra drama and often more interessting things happen. With too many players ingame it starts to suck though.

I think 2v2 & maybe 3v3 is just as challenging because other strategies become possible like airstart and so you also have to be prepared for that and with bad teamplay you might end up 2v1 or maybe thats even part of the tactic that one player tries to hold out 2v1 while the other player makes air/tech/eco and this sentence is quite long anyway.

Make an air map and youll be able to start air even in BA 1v1...What cannot be fixed however is the fact that even voice communication is slower than our own nerveous system.

I think spring would be more popular if servers had a lower limit, i think 4v4 is enough.

When you think about it, spring is much better NOT being popular. Its pretty cool knowing everyone you're gaming with

yes on some watermaps its maybe possible as well. But in team games air/risky stuff is more possible even on normal maps.

You only mention 8v8 and 1v1/2v2. Why no middle ground of 3v3/4v4?

The reason 1v1/2v2 are often boring is because once the tide turns, the game is over. When the first mistake is made, the game is determined, which is far too soon. Only a duel of two really good pros can be interesting to watch and hard to predict because they are good at recovering.

On the flip side, I almost never play a 8v8 DSD fest, but I know that it's just a clusterfudge where individual contributions don't really matter out of the 16 players.

But 3v3/4v4 games are just plain sweet spot. So long as the teams were balanced, the games are almost always a lot of fun. A player might make an error but he has 2 or 3 teammates to back him up when his crap is on fire. Rarely are such games determined upon the first mistake. It takes several mistakes on one side for the other side to seize the advantage and get well over half the map. At that point the game can be determined, but it takes a while to reach it.
