Proposal: Add basic mapoptions to base content

Post by FLOZi »

Simple stuff like wet/dry, day/night and perhaps precipitation could be added to all old maps that don't have mapoptions via the base content (maphelper.sdz).

Obviously any future maps' (& current maps with pre-existing mapoptions.lua) mapoptions would remain the discretion of the mapper.

Discuss.

(My desire for this is fuelled by wanting to be able to make maps with water too deep for S44 ground units playable in S44)

I think that, if we could get someone(s) to maintain the code, this is a great idea! :-)

Feel free to bastardize, rape, molest, abuse, fondle, spoon or otherwise use my crap that I wrote.

As long as it doesn't break the gundam maps I am happy.

*edit* forgot my "le" on fondle ... yeah... one of those nights */edit*

Agreed, adding smoths feature placer mapoptions to base would be a very good idea.

I don't see how you'd choose the waterline for maps that are already dry, but a default dry mapoption would be good, if only to get rid of the 50MB "-dry" variants.

I'm not particularly fond of the night option, unless it automatically comes with CA search lights :P

I'm wary of rain, snow and fog, because that kind of effect might be buggy on some hardware.

Have you looked at the night option on my last 2 maps? It's pretty sweet.

My favorite is night + snow and fog.

it would be cool if options had proper gameplay effects.

Like fog halving view radius of units etc etc.

Snow does not work on my hardware.
(Gundam .gif was made on another PC)

When I tried your penultimate map, I had submerged map enabled by default when direct running Spring, and I had dark-night colored units over bright-day scenery.

Also there were lots of files and lots of folders and it was confusing.

Anything that gets added to base needs to be simple and everything-proof. So your map code does not qualify.

I dont support wet/dry, but day/night snow fog and rain are all awesome.
Could modoptions replace default spring trees with other ones?

zw: mapopts usually fails when not run from lobby. What is your gfx hardware? the snow on xenolithic should work on ATI as well.

otherside: right, we know how much you love it when mappers change mod stuff

you dont support wet/dry because you dont like your precious gameplay "ruined" right ?.

Aslong as the map has options and none are forced. The more variation you can have within 1 map the better.

Now stop aiming pointless attacks at me when you should have just read the post clearly.

Only when sloppily coded. There's nothing fated about it.

While I agree it would be usefull to have the code for such effects in maphelper.sdz, I don't think they should be accessible / enabled by default (Snow on comet, yay).

ZW, have you tried the map xenolithic v4? That should have working snow for you.

Consider that map options code my last general spring contribution. To have you of all people ripp the code which was just done for general demonstration purposes really upsets me. After I do this ui stuff for 1944 I will never again do another bit of code for any project other than gundam.

Every time I do something for you guys people ripp on it. fine. Have fun with argh.

can't the majority of "map options" style effects be duplicated by mod-options already?

My gut would be that if a Game designer wants to enable some "map options" they do so as "mod options"... so maybe smoth wants to have fog as an option in Gundam and the added benefit is that he can have extra lights show up on his mechs and reduced visibility effects be turned on when the fog option is selected.

No! I'm not sure if we should call this kind of reaction a Smoth-gasm, Argh-rage, AF-drop... I understand when people demonstrate a lack of appreciation for your hard work it is upsetting... but the loud-minority that harshes your praise-buzz shouldn't stop you from contributing.

...Sorry... lack of sleep due to toothache coupled with Tylonol+Ibuprofen+Coffee, I can't tell which parts of that were meant sarcasticly... just assume the parts that you are offended by are meant in jest while attempting to extract some kind of wisdom.
