replays

Post by Gota »

There are some awesome replays in the replay website but they are very hard to access since you need to download and install older spring versions...

How can we deal with this issue and make sure awesome replays dont get lost?

Is it possible to convert replays so they can run on the latest spring v?
Is it possible to convert them automaticly to video and allow people to download replays in a video format if the replay is of an older Spring version?

This issue also prevents us from making tutorial replays.

replays use less storage space (and DL bandwith) and allow to see all parts of the battlefield, with which camera you want, plus see extra info, ...
i agree that tutorial replays should be made available as videos (in addition to the replay). if someone is willing to setup a system that does auto demo to video translation, eg. with the action finder widget, or a special tutorial preparation widget.. fine :-)

I would already be happy if the files were not zipped. Because its annoying having to unpack them. Its useless anyway, a 500kb replay gets compressed to 200kb or something. Every map/mod/screenshot is bigger and gets more downloads.

Upload them with a usefull description.
Who actually wants to dl a replay with a description like "lo0ll gg nice gmae. duration: 2h 45 minutes."

True, also the replay website needs a rating system to sort out the garbage.
Of course the problem is how to get people to rank a replay after they downloaded it watched it and probably closed the files download page.

If this was somehow integrated into lobbies...
Say you want to watch an old replay.
You don't have the mod or the map or the spring version.
The lobby would check what you don't have, check the total size of the components ask the user and download it as part of the overall replay download.
Biggest issue is probably somehow allowing an automatic install and uninstall of different spring versions for the sole purpose of watching replays and not force the user to do anything manually.
