Need a modeler

Post by TassadarZeratul »

Anyone up for working on a mod with me? I can do all the technical stuff, but I model like a retarded limbless kitten. In other words, I need someone to make models for me. The mod has 10 units and 9 structures per race (three races), all of which are space units (so they need very little, if any, animation). I will also need a few misc graphics, like explosions, missiles, resources, etc.

Alternatively, if someone can dierect me to any premade graphics, that works too.

If anyone wants some more details about the mod: It's set in space and based around mobile unit producers, called Summonships. You start out with a single Summonship and for the most part can't get more. (Exception: Old One players can get a secondary Summonship when they unlock their third tier of units.) Resources work sort of like they do in StarCraft (you mine from a resource patch with a worker, which drops the resources off at a building), but resources are warped in by workers, not preplaced.

If you dont need that many models, you can just try to get models from modelbase, of just from other mods while you get your gameplay togethers. You really should check out other mods like The Cursed.

Ah, it turns out I can rip the models from the game FreeSpace 2. (It's been released as freeware, so I can do this legally.) Sorry for posting this when I didn't need to.

Modelers are in short supply and unless you can carry some of that weight, your project is dead in the water.

Actually, it isn't so much the lack of modelers, it is the lack of texturers and animators. Anyway, good to hear you have a base for your work.

There are plenty of models available in CA, my spherebots are a common fallback in this community when they need an IP free model. I didnt know FreeSpace 2 content was free, please keep us updated as to your progress in importing these models into Spring, i look forward to it!

Just out of curiosity, would you mind filling me in on what kind of model and animation format freespace 2 uses? I believe they could be a great asset as spring models.

FreeSpace (and FS2) use a special format called POFs. However, POFs can be converted to a normal format using a program called POF Constructor Suite. (You need to extract the models using VPView first, though.) I'll convert all the models in FreeSpace 2 and release them as a graphics pack.

EDIT: FS/FS2 models have no animations, besides engine glows and a few rotating parts. (The rotation data is stored as a special part of the POF that I believe is lost if you convert the model.) Dunno if this is a problem. They are space ships so they shouldn't need any animation, except rotating parts on the Faustus, Charbydis, Knososs, and Shivan CommNode, which is pretty easy to re-create.

If you're making a space mod, you could probably use KDR's models from THIS. I'm pretty sure he licenses everything he makes as public domain.

Of course, you'd have to texture the models or find someone to do it, unless you're also ok with all teamcolored models.

keep in mind there is a difference between "we have no interest in selling this game anymore, y'all can distribute this in whatever manner you choose" and "we have no interest in selling this game anymore, y'all can take whatever you want out of this and use it in your own stuff"

freeware != open source

The game ENGINE was released by Voilition, afaik the CONTENT belongs to Interplay (or whoever owns them now)

Its an important distinction.

Damnit, you're right! >.>

I guess I'll just get permission from the FS2 community to use fan-made models.

for now id go with lolmodels or use KDR's THIS models (the advantage to using KDR's models is that they are already scripted to work in Spring, so all you've gotta do is do some value fiddlingand set up your resource & production model.)
