edit: Solved.
After going through just about every single faq and forum for sound in ubuntu, and doing everything, with no results, it finally came down to this:
in alsamixer, I lowered the volume of the PCM from 100% to 80%, and the crackling is gone. All other documentation said to make sure it wasn't at 0.
So, check that if you have this issue. otherwise, it was the reinstall of alsa and pulseaudio that fixed it... bumped alsa plugin to 1.0.21a from the default 1.0.20, too.
If you run into this issue, you'll notice that, if you run spring in a window, and open the volume control, applications tab, that the alsa plugin for [spring] will flicker... weird. anyways, that's what twigged me onto the fact that it was the plugin, not pulseaudio.
Hope this helps someone.
Hello,
I'm running Spring 0.80.5.1 on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) and since my upgrade from 9.04, sound has not worked properly.
When a game starts, the sound works find for a couple minutes, then slowly gets static-y then finally cuts out all together.
I've updated ALSA to 1.0.21, I've changed various settings in pulseaudio, verified that I'm using an up-to-date version of openAL, etc.etc.
Anyone else have this issue? Anyone else have a fix? This sucks!
Thanks in advance...
edit: I've already tried removing Pulseaudio and switching to ALSA, but Karmic is not happy with this as an option.

Re: Sound Crackles then Cuts out
i don't know about this problem in particular, but 99.9% of the time, the problem is pulseaudio. you should get rid of it. uninstall it with synaptic (i do not remember which packages exactly).

I'd love to do this... Karmic, however, has built the entire sound subsystem around PA. after doing a purge of pulseaudio, you get no sound. you add in ALSA manually, you get no sound.hoijui wrote:i don't know about this problem in particular, but 99.9% of the time, the problem is pulseaudio. you should get rid of it. uninstall it with synaptic (i do not remember which packages exactly).
PA is heavily integrated into Karmic, as it's the "direction" ubuntu is going.
While removal of pulseaudio gets rid of the crackling, it also gets rid of all audio. Not a very good fix. :)
thanks for the idea, however...!
Re: Sound Crackles then Cuts out
the same was the case for 9.04 already, and there still was a way to get rid of pulseaudio and still have sound. am pretty sure it is still possible in 9.10 too, somehow.
