.:New Map:. River Dale Remake

Post by Forboding Angel »

Not sure if you can call it "New", but anyways.

Riverdale has always been one of my all time favorite maps in spring. There was a problem with the original though. The bottom team would always win because of imbalanced metal distribution.

Several years ago, Secure asked me to remake it, and even provided me with all the source files, however, those were lost long ago to a HD crash, and the fact that he wanted the metal distribution to stay the same. My immediate thought was "How does remaking it make any real sense in that set of restrictions?".

The other day I started thinking about it again, and decided on a course of action that I think everyone will like.

First of all, the heightmap is exactly the same as riverdale. No alterations whatsoever.

Secondly, the metal map is rebalanced for north and south. But even then I took it a step further. All the original metal spot locations are in the exact same places (give or take a few pixels, I did as best as I could with a screenie of f4 in spring and a photoshop overlay), but the extra spots were added in different locations to help the north expand.

As it was before, there was pretty much no reason for the north to expand very far past the river, which meant that the north always ended up with the disadvantage of having less metal overall and less occupied territory. Furthermore, once the north started getting pushed back, they had nowhere else to go, which meant that once the middle was broken, the game was over. Now, that should no longer be the case.

Even the geovents are in the same locations. The only thing I didn't re-add was the trees.

No point in posting slopemaps, as it is exactly the same as River Dale.

Do you happen to have a copy of sparewood so that I can rip the heightmap?

If not I can always guestimate it. DO you happen to remember how large sparewood was? 8x8 10x10 12x12 etc?

I'm pretty sure it was either 10x10 or 12x12 but I jsut can't remember.

I do remember Sparewood as being a sort of sherwood OTA remake.

I had a copy, it has all the maps inside one archive, hence why its no longer playable in its old form.

Good to see! Although the left side of the south is very easy to defend, easier than that river (since the river is so far back that once you beat them back there, you've already prettymuch won).

That tends to channel the attackers into the east side on the south.

Still, thats a bit more subjective, way better, hope the metal distro fixes it.

Riverdale has allways been my favourite map. It's golfcourse texture together with its asymetry made this a piece of art.

However games tended to be over in either a couple of minutes or a couple of hours. The grass could have been a bit fresher. But you did quite well changing the metallayout. :-)
