The .xvid file
I have a movie in a file with a .xvid extension
VLC Mediaplayer classic, windows media player, the latest XVid codecs, renaming the extension to .avi have all succumbed to the might that is the unplayable .xvid file.
How the f*ck do I play this thing?!

Re: The .xvid file
Ive paid that site numerous visits and installed the latest codecs to no avail. I gave up on that file but Id like to know what to do if I ever come across another video with an xvid extension
Re: The .xvid file
combined community codec pack.. now stop bitching about codecs
Re: The .xvid file
VLC fails? Haven't tried mplayer though? http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/downloads.php
Re: The .xvid file
I read XVid with VLC fine. You probably just have a corrupt file.
Re: The .xvid file
take a look at the header or fourcc
Re: The .xvid file
I've had VLC play an Xvid file with corrupted headers... it spent like 3 minutes analyzing the file and then started playing it.
If you have an xvid file that's not playing in VLC then that file is probably not actually an xvid file.

Re: The .xvid file
file could be incomplete or currupt
Re: The .xvid file
Doesn't really matter if it's incomplete as long as the header is intact
Re: The .xvid file
VLC media player uses its own codecs and has played pretty much everything I've ever sent at it. If VLC can't play it, it's probably the fault of the file.
Re: The .xvid file
I expect its a bad file, notepad++ borks opening the 900mb behemoth though. Mediaplayer classic just says it cannot render the video, VLC just loads it btu doesnt do anythign when you press play, or show a timeindex
Re: The .xvid file
What's the video stream ID MPC tells you in the report? Google for it
