It's not just a random petition. It's pretty official. This list is hosted by the German government, and you need to sign with your registered personal ID details. When 40.000 "subscribers" are reached (which did happen), the German Bundestag is compelled to have a hearing about the issue.

Because of all the public outrage, the law was at least watered down a little bit.

agreed. this internet 'wild west' period isnt going to last forever- hell, its almost over already- sooner or later its going to be fully moderated just like any other medium. internet nerds (the force that wants to keep the internet free) are very much in the minority (both in population, and in social influence) so sooner or later its going to cave in.

With that in mind, I think its our duty to fight tooth and nail to delay it wherever possible, because once the internet is under control its going to be muted, and pedestrian.

True conservatives aren't for internet regulation... O_O Course I only speak for the american variety of conservatives, but conservatives believe that the internet should remain as it is, a truly free medium.

Now there are some old fags around that spout off about regulation and whatnot and 1 or 2 claim to be conservatives, but I can claim to be a chimpanzee, that doesn't make me one.

this internet 'wild west' period isnt going to last forever

The internet has been free for years and I dont think this is going to change soon. Half-hearted attempts to regulate it never really worked. As of today, music and software is basically still free, e.g. government and companies still focus on filesharing, while hosters like rapidshare are beginning to take over, which officials don't really seem to get yet.

Also, reasons for the censoring in Germany now are not because of some conspirative government trying to control the media, but for votes (everbody is against child porn, surely people will vote for us), lobby of the music industry trying to get a foothold, and ambitious leaders wanting to "do something" and have "succesful projects" in their CV.

btw, in the light of the public reaction, theres a lot of funny talk about the "internet generation" now, so people begin to realize that restrictive politics will costs votes.
