Map Packs

Post by aGorm »

Hi Everyone. I havn't realy added any maps for a while (as you may have noticed) however I was wondering what people would sa to the following.

Useing the new Map format I can use textures from other maps in other maps. However this makes one map working dependent on another map.

What I was thinking was, seeing as how I'm making two maps that have a similare set of tiles, should i just pack both maps in one pakage?

I was thinking of maybe putting 3 in one, a 16ish x 16 2 player, a 16x16 4 player and a 22x22 four player map. As theyed share alot of tiles the filesize would be lower, although it would still be bigger than just one map.

Thoughts people.

If some feature for tilesets shared across maps could be implemented, then that sure would save a lot of dling! :P

It's already implemented:

I think you should definitely do it. While your at it it would be nice if you could explain how to do it. I have no idea myself..

simple, use the -e comand when running the map conv

IE: " -e myothermapstexturefile.smt "

it will then use those textures plus make a new file for any extras needed.

I say do it.

I'd rather download one file thats the size of for e.g 2 or 2.5 maps to get 4 instead of 4 separate files

Good good. The first 3 maps are purple and bassed on teh look of the acid maps... just getting the smaller ones done (big one is finshed :)

Also they will hopefully have a custome skybox... something sutablie impressive.

Me says yes!

If one of the maps in the package isn't so good or much played as the others (the only problem i can think of), it is minor because having diferent maps is usefull.

And, you can make it the "aGorm's map pack".

I say its fine if you release two or three at a time; but any more and it will slow the speed at which you release maps, which is never a good thing.

It may also restrict the way you make maps, forcing you to restrain your creativity in order to reuse the tiles that you have used thus far...

Don't worry i was thinking more like:
Download 1 map, get two extra free!

I wont purposly make the map all use the same set, but if i am making two acid maps, why not share half the textures? :)

Hopefully it will save some space, plus there will be more maps.

I was only thinking of maybe 3 at a time max or they all begin to be same-y.

Yeah... I know that this is kind-of arbitrary but from listening to all your discussions and remembering how annoying it was that EVERY Classic TA Map was exactly the freaking the same... I think that lots of maps with the same tyles is fine for those folks that have slow connections but more then 2 or 3 from the same set otherwise would get dull...

maybe just a small map, an epic one, a sea one and something else. Thus a variety of gameplay on a tileset and if you dont like ti mvoe on, otherwise make more.
