My suggestion for a Lua UI mod is a list of income and expenses.
Here is a quick mockup.

The first column contains a label for the resource income/outcome, additional information such as how many of something is turned on, for example: if I had 9 shield generators, but only 1 is switched on (1/9) would be a useful piece of information. When constructing buildings or units, the amount being built at that time would make the potentially excessive-seeming resource usage more understandable.
The next two columns display the Metal and Energy consumption/generation for that label.
At the end of the list, there should be a total label, detailing the overall profit/loss.
In retrospect, having the Energy column before the Metal column is a better idea. (Label, Energy, Metal).
