such a nice voice

Re: such a nice voice
yeah, though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLsJryWc5XE has a decent voice too
Re: such a nice voice
Actually the lady's a weird genius.
I can imagine that it doesn't translate if you're not an American, though. She's using a lot of very specific cultural references that are obscure and just wouldn't translate really well.
Re: such a nice voice
Eh, the music is interesting and I normally like how the harp sounds, but, in my opinion, her voice is too shrill.
Re: such a nice voice
Yeah, not the greatest voice, ever. Kinda female Tom Waits, though- it's hard to say how much is artifice.
Re: such a nice voice
I find that voice rather unpleasant.

To each to our own opinion, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC03hmS1Brk but this guy sings alot better.
Re: such a nice voice
The same friend who introduced me to Joanna Newsom introcued me to Regina Spektor. They both sound kinda similar, and are linked in my head. I much prefer Regina Spektor, so thought I'd share

Re: such a nice voice
yeah, reminded me of her too, and she definitely has a better voice imho.
Re: such a nice voice
Regina Spektor is awesome! I have her "Begin To Hope" album.
Regina Spektor, Lenka, and Katy Perry are all grouped in as similar music by me because they're all experimental and can be catagorized as either pop/rock/and, for Regina and Katy, un-folk, but I prefer these three singers styles to the harpist's style.

Oi yes. Like listening to "The Nanny" sing. *shudder*TheMightyOne wrote:i have to agreezwzsg wrote:I find that voice rather unpleasant.
Re: such a nice voice
somehow the singer reminded me of this finnish artist
Re: such a nice voice
I like this song, but I prefer the longer pieces from her new album. Her voice either does it for you or not i guess, i bloody love it. Devendra Banhart is similar (sorry if that was linked, youtube said my country isnt good enough to watch the second link), though he is a bit more wierd sometimes. Link related
Re: such a nice voice
Depends a great deal on what you consider experimental but I find that a pretty weird adjective to use to describe these people!!!Panda wrote:Regina Spektor, Lenka, and Katy Perry are all grouped in as similar music by me because they're all experimental and can be catagorized as either pop/rock/and, for Regina and Katy, un-folk,
obligatory cranes mention

if you can't handle voices out the ordinary your life is horrible
Re: such a nice voice
I hoped this topic would be about discovering unusual voices, not about over-marketed mainstream pop singer with digitally corrected voice.Panda wrote:Katy Perry
Love the first two comments.Sleksa wrote:somehow the singer reminded me of this finnish artist

Re: such a nice voice
Oi, "Experimental" is generally "Bad" dressed up as "Hey I'm unique, so I don't suck, I'm unique!"
She's on tune which is one thing, but her voice makes me want to take a cheese grater to my face. Different strokes for different folks.
Experimental is prolly the worst term to use tho. Different, or even Unique would work a bit better, cause to many people, Experimental is synonymous with cutting yourself in the closet late at night which just so happens to be quite fail.
I suppose the part that irritates me is the fact that "Experimental" is an excuse, not an actual description. If it were actually a description (and it RARELY ever is), then I would be ok with it.

Re: such a nice voice
I know that among us you have more vocal experience but frankly I hate how you bash successful artists forb. even lacuna coil has some voice manipulation on their tracks... I don't care how hot the singer is..
Dar Williams I like her voice a lot, soothing and very calming.
if we are going to talk about oddball vocals, I like jimmy in msi a lot.
I don't know I hate how some people get all caught up in what is special or in their opinion skillful. It is just gay, people can be entirely talentless and still be great entertainers. Sometimes some stuff is just fun. Want to argue against it? I am pretty sure the people have spoken and john coulter's little experiment was amazingly successful.

I dont make a particulay habit of bashing successful artists, however, its worth mentioning that almost every artist you have heard on an album has had the vocals manipulated. its just the way stuff works.
Studio time is ridiculously expensive. As a result, if something can be fixed via manipulation, it is.
No point in getting righteously indignant about it. Its not that deep. Once in a blue moon will a vocalist record where they hit everything so perfect and at such quality that it needs no editing. the odds just arent that good.
Lacuna Coil has a lot of vocal processing, and im glad it does as it is incredible. If you prefer raw and uncut, then that is what you like and no one will fault you for it.
I like the idea of harp and singing, its noting new by any means though, and her voice is quite shrill which is what makes it fairly unplesant to listen to.
Actually if she didnt hit those high notes it would be pretty ok. But yar, one opinion is just an opinion, the experience behind that opinion, while noteable, doesnt change the fact that its just an opinion.

Re: such a nice voice
Not true... Maybe for the music you listen to, but not for everyone. Most of my records don't have post-production like that. And often you can hear that too, but I don't mind, I prefer it that way than overtly polished and clinical...Forboding Angel wrote:I dont make a particulay habit of bashing successful artists, however, its worth mentioning that almost every artist you have heard on an album has had the vocals manipulated. its just the way stuff works.
