Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me
Hi,
Let me explain how i came to suggest the follow. I talked to Lurker, Braindamage and licho. They could tell me several things that helped me getting my answers. I am not a coder that can contribute but i hope some people i can discuss this.
The concept.
I wanted to intergrate Planetwars in to Springlobby is what i thought when writing an article about Planetwars. As read above it didnt stop by a thought. Braindamage convinced me it wasnt up to him to get the ball roliing, but that he wanted to take a look at it when it was introduced in a not one mod supported concept.
I heard licho, quantum, lurker and jonanin were some of the developers(not sure i missed out on someone) so i started interigating them with my IF, WHEN, WOULD questions. Wich lead to the fact that planetwars could be well ported to springlobby if ther was a team that would do testing and contribute to the proces.
One of the reactions was that it would be possible for most mods. And another one was to not intergrate stuff to public just for one mod.

They've quite openly said that Planetwars is to promote CA and they don't want BA running it, so that may present a problem if you were hoping for a multi-mod integration.

Also, it was deliberately coded to break with BA even if BA were to run on it, in about 90 different places. This was factored into the design and there is no way to fix it without a complete rewrite.TheFatController wrote:They've quite openly said that Planetwars is to promote CA and they don't want BA running it, so that may present a problem if you were hoping for a multi-mod integration.

This does not surprise me in the least, CA-Fags are fags.CarRepairer wrote:Also, it was deliberately coded to break with BA even if BA were to run on it, in about 90 different places. He's onto us, and that's why I'm bringing it out into the open.TheFatController wrote:I'm also hoping it's not been deliberatley coded to break with BA but that might be expecting too much.
Re: Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me
Embedded deep in the PW codebase is that there can only be one round of BA, and when this round ends half of the code self destructs and it can only work with CA.

Of course, TFC is right, my call for maintainer of BA planetwars in some threads was just evil plot.
When such person appears, i will tell him to f**k off and laugh evilly.
muhahahahahahaa
P.S. in fact there is second planetwars ready for BA, it had been for like 4-5 months. But its not public because its not tested/balanced.

Re: Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me
And the main problem is not "integrating" main problem is coding brain new C++ PW client that works in SL -> probably as much work as SL itself so far.
None of the current planetwars developers is willing to code something so massive in C++, so its really hopeless unless some extremely motivated pro with 3 months of free time appears.

Re: Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me
I'd rather see a way to get web-app metagames better integrated into the lobby in general, and stick to web-apps being the client interface for these things. Maybe a way to integrate a web-page into the lobby (like the SpringLobby thing that was added to TASC).
Combine that with a downloadable file that, when executed sends a suite of commands to the lobby client - similar to how Torrents works. Thus, Planet-Wars web-page sends the user a file when they perform an action, and that makes them join the relevant game.
Or set it up as a custom URL handler like they did for Unreal, where Unreal servers could be links in the browser using foo://bar.com/baz/
... but the file-thing is probably more cross-platform.

I like the current Springie/web interface. Just make PW-Springie show more weblinks as it talks to you. Thank you for registering, here is your Personal Profile Page. Your planet is Gobbledygoo.

Re: Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me
Well i am glad there is a willingness to make this happen. And a prototype for how it should be set up. Its a pitty that since ba isnt pushing most mods away anymore we coudnt even set it up if we wanted i understand because of the workload and time that need to be invested to make it work. I now discussed the option a bit (that also said in one of the replays) that a html intergration in springlobby with a ladder ranking or some links be a good beginning. a html with some competitve statistics would be nice.(koBSG :D, KOCA, KOCA etc.)
Re: Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me

It's been waiting for start.sh to be clicked on, for four months.
It ended up this way because, once it's started, it takes a lot of work to react to problems, technical or in game design, and our motivation died down when PW games ceased.
The s44 version didn't take off for lack of time from the s44 devs, as well.
So, while theoretically it can work with other mods, in practice it's hard to find the time and people.
With lobby intergration, tasclient had the right approach, IMO. The scripting system could have allowed us to make a special UI for PW games. I had already a script that displayed PW ranks next to the normal lobby rank. Sure, python scripting was crashy, but the bugs would have been slowly fixed.
While it lasted, PW was a lot of fun! I still think PW can be resurrected some day!
Maybe I missed something but we still don't know who will do itdaan 79 wrote:Well i am glad there is a willingness to make this happen. And a prototype for how it should be set up.

Is it time to register to http://www.mmorpg.com for some help? :)
Re: Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me
Spring 1944 could do it, but we are exploring other options, and it is true, we have fairly little time to spend.
Re: Planetwars and lobbies and mods and me
In recent years, a surge in the use of the novel technique known by some as "sar-cæsm" has changed the way people talk to each other. A person invokes sar-cæsm by saying the opposite of what is actually meant, in an unusually sardonic form of humor.[TS]Lollocide wrote:This does not surprise me in the least, CA-Fags are fags.CarRepairer wrote:Also, it was deliberately coded to break with BA even if BA were to run on it, in about 90 different places. You may want to reread the thread and keep an eye out for this "sar-cæsm."
Also, CarRepairer is a CA developer
