Werewolf Forum Game - Interest?
Anyone heard of Werewolf (also known as Mafia)?
Basic rules in a nutshell:
-The game consists of villagers, werewolves, and seers.
The game is divided into day and night.
Day: the village will lynch one player. All players, regardless of role, may discuss the game during the day in the game thread. Each player votes for which player to lynch. At the end of the day, the player with the most votes is lynched, and his role is revealed to all. No external communication is allowed.
Night: the werewolves eat one player. The wolves may discuss who to eat among themselves in private via whatever medium they choose (AIM, IRC, PMs, etc.). Also, the seer(s) each can learn the identity of one player using their magical divination powers. This "peek" is submitted to the game moderator, who reveals the peeked player's role to the seer in question. The game thread is locked during the night and no posts may be made.
Before the game begins, the wolves receive a PM listing the identities of all the wolves. Villagers and seers are only notified of their roles, and don't know any other player's role.
All communication by villagers and seers must be in the game thread during the day.
The object of the game:
The village (ALL villagers and seers, whether dead or alive) wins when all wolves are dead.
The wolf pack (ALL werewolves, whether dead or alive) wins when wolves constitute a majority of the remaining players.
There are no ties due to the structure of the game since there is always an odd number of players.
Anyone interested in playing? I can mod. Day would run from 11AM to 11PM US Eastern time, night from 11PM to 11AM.

Re: Werewolf Forum Game - Interest?
I don't think we have enough active forumers... but otherwise, ya, I'm in. I've actually played 3-4 of these before on forums, and probably like 40 or so in the IRL version.
In terms of the rules, it's too hard to enforce "no external communication allowed" during night times, I'll create a private forum for the game and we can lock it during nights... but it's also nice to run a TWG channel, which would normally be in IRC which has a -m feature (mutes all nonadmin talk) but spring lobby doesn't have a comparable channel feature unfortunately, so we'll have to find an alternative way of making that work. Maby a TWG bot you talk to via PM or something while the master channel is locked? All the versions of the game I've played have allowed private communication during nights (because it's too hard to stop small groups of people, weather they are wolfs or not, from chatting in other channels or MSN or whatever)
Also worth noting, there are a bunch of different versions of the game with different player rules. I personally prefer the game with a protective role to add a little more randomness and give the villagers an extra boost. Especially for first timer games. If it catches on we can try more elaborate setups in the future.

I'm in, what's the point of stopping private communication during the night? Identities are still unverifiable and it's not like people can hear others taking actions.

Exactly. And it's just impossible, 2 players from the game start a match or something, and they're not allowed to accidentally mention the game?Google_Frog wrote:I'm in, what's the point of stopping private communication during the night? The other thing, the forum version of these games tend to get pretty intense. It's the kind of thing that can envelop a player's thought pretty heavily, it's legitimately hard for them to not talk about it at all for periods of time.

I'm in. I've never played this before, although I've heard others mention it.
Now, if someone could devise a forum adaptation of the game "Assassin..."

Think we can get at least 13? That's the smallest game that's really good IMO, though 9 is playable.
On night communications: the point of the rule is that everyone needs to be able to see all talk between villagers, seers, and wolves. It's obviously an honor rule. Obviously only talk of substance is banned, "hey this werewolf game is pretty cool" is fine of course. The wolves use things villagers/seers post to figure out who to eat - the main early game objective of the wolves is to eat all the seers. The villagers use past interactions between known wolves and unknowns to gain more information on who other wolves might be.
On the angel: I figured we wouldn't have enough players to run a game with an angel, that typically requires a larger game (17+ players).
Here is a post with the "official" rules and links to good strategy articles. (Minor rules change that's commonly accepted but not noted there: in a 9 player game, the seer is given a random peek of a villager on night 0, but may peek normally after that.)

Perhaps, since we are a worldwide community, you could try a different approach to night/day by making them alternate every 24 hour period. 24 hours day, 24 hours night, repeat.

Re: Werewolf Forum Game - Interest?
Why? some of the most interesting game mechanics I've ever seen are things like the seer privately transferring a journal containing some telling information to a player he trusted prior to being killed by wolfs. I've also seen wolves fake a similar journal in a later game. It's pretty standard, from my experience, in these long drawn out forum games, for villagers to try to form small alliances and stuff like that. It makes for an interesting dynamic when wolfs try to get in on these things to gain player's trust and stuff. It also makes the wolfs game a little more difficult, since they don't necessarily have solid quotes for "I think X Player (who actually is a wolf) is a wolf!". Outright accusations like that tend to be done in private to just enough players to push the vote through. However, if one of those players IS a wolf, and they kill off the accuser, then the other players who knew what was going on start asking them selfs "who else did he contact?" "Could one of our inner circle be a threat?"Felix the Cat wrote: On night communications: the point of the rule is that everyone needs to be able to see all talk between villagers, seers, and wolves.
Anyways, I guess I'm just saying I like a more complicated and dramatic microgame.
