Spring Engine cinematic trailer?

Post by MidKnight »

what do you think of making an actual spring engine movie? not like the movies that are already on youtube, a movie with actual graphic effects, actual music, and actual eye candy. the closest I've seen to this is the spring showcase, but that sucks.

If you're with me, I'll draw up some guidelines, and we can get started!

no offense, cabbage. your effects are awesome, but there's just way too much content, it's too long for your average video game player to sit down and watch, and (imo) they tend to have bad music :P . In essence, it seems as if the movie was made for viewing by the Spring community.

This is what we have right now. I'm looking for something more akin to this.

I like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpKqQxTURik It has fitting music, excellent camera movement on great graphics making for some awesome moments.

The first half of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7ytaw7Nxzc is quite movie-like, too, it even has a story, filled with betrayal and sadness then unexpected hope, and some great battle scene.

What? That's like one of the worst trailer I've ever seen! Just some shots of cheap CGI dude with some japanese names in each corner. I expected at least something like Dante's trailer.

Spoilers: He won't. He will write a "scenario" (actually, just a non-sensical little text from his dream), then go like, "I've done the hard part where all other Spring movies failed, now someone else go film it!".

@smoth: cabbage's effects are top notch. His music and title presentation just sucks :-)

@zwzsg: the first video is excellent. It syncs very nicely to the music, and shows a whole lot of each mod, but it has several GIGANTIC flaws. The PURE video was okay, but even space-drop anims get boring after 2 minutes :P

Now, what I'm looking for:
- Under 3 minutes. No self-respecting halo/gears of war robot will sit through 10 minutes of footage unless it contains enough gore to make normal people barf.

- Lots of explosions/camera shakes/booms. I don't want to see how bases are built in a game. 'nuff said

- Good models, less zooming in. We want potential players to see the epic scale of Spring battles, not our ugly 3do models.

- NO CAVEDOG MODELS WHATSOEVER

- Music syncing. If a scene change or explosion isnt synced to the rhythm, it just seems awkward.

- Higher resolution/quality: only use pretty maps, no hard map edges available, lots of bloom and bump/dynamic water visible. At least 1280x720 resolution.

EDIT: reply to zwzsg's post:

Code: Select all

Arghsmothbrawlstyle mainframe initializing...

I had to find a trailer in under 5 minutes! cut me some slack!
Also, I was not displaying the content for the crappy CGI flick, but for its mode of presentation. Notice that all the scene changes are synced, and that the game's storyline is hinted at throughout the trailer. All this is done in under 2 minutes.

@the dante trailer: It's okay. I personally didn't much like the voiceovers, but that's fine. the Music syncing was so-so, but you can't argue with it's clips and its artful way of quickly laying out what the game is about.

I can do everything except for the effects/post production/voices. If I have to, I'll even learn those skills and procure some sort of video editing software and do that too. Aside form that, I'll get you all the raw footage you want, and anything besides.

EDITEDIT: Cabbage, I judged you unfairly. I was looking at showcase #5.

#7 (is that the newest?) is much better, imo, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. It's an excellent showcase, but not that good of a trailer :P

It's a simpson's reference.

You can see a star swipe in action during the scene changes in this youtube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7_p_2h_XbE

Had never seen that one, someone needs to take on the task of finding and listing all Spring videos!

Looks pretty good, guess increasing the speed during replays (Or maybe skip half frames when encoding) makes from prettier vid.

He seems to have a problem with color conversion, especially on the explosion.

Would be better if he turned off clock, buildbar widget, ETA widget, mapmarkers and whatever else is polluting the screen.

Would be even more better if widget writers used "Spring.IsGUIHidden()" more in their widgets.

mushign everything into one video reduces the percieved value of the content while implying its not worth a whole video.

Dont showcase spring as a whole, showcase spring on a game by game basis, and itnerlink the videos so the potential user ends up spending hours watching them, its far more effective and would allow for far better quality videos.

Any showcase that goes for the engine as a whole should focus on its features and abilities as an engine, not the merits fo each game as it currently is. Things like strategic zoom and particle sfx crossplatform support etc

is there anything of which we are 'the only' ?
IE: "the only cross platform rts with strategic zoom!" :?:
