Spring is slow, but only on some maps (BA mod)

Post by SuperBastel »

Hi all,

I played spring for a while and noticed with the latest build (spring_0.77b5-R6842) and the BA mod (tested on 6.6 and 6.7) a strange behaviour:

On some maps spring gets so slow that it is unplayable and annoying the other players in the game.
Example map slow: Emain Macha (9,66 MB) - < 1fps

On other maps it runs just normal.
Example map fast: Tropical (19 MB) - 35-40 fps

A strange thing is that Emain Macha is smaller than Tropical (map size & file size) and is slower though.

I tried disabling and enabling the LUA-widgets and tweaking graphics settings.
The FPS Manager lua-widget was turned off and on with resetting the graphics settings between tests - without success.

Has anyone else encountered this?
Or maybe someone knows how to fix it?

I really like spring and hate it to ask others to kick me from the game because of an unplayable slowdown of spring.

Hi!
Not really a solution but - what about the number of aircraft in the game? Its usually the number one thing to slow down the sim. Also, before you reply, press B during the slowdown to see whats taking the CPU time.
Ift its aircraft - no local solution is possible. Ask people to build aa and not to spam fighters ;)

Thanks for the tip with key B, I'll look at that.

But aircraft is it definitly not - slowdown starts before the game starts (when still selecting startpoint).

Even on lowest graphic settings it is so slow on this maps - I can do nothing but press Shift+ESC to get out of it.
On other maps it runs pretty normal, even with a lot of units and aircrafts - a great game :-)

I have a 3,4 P4 with 1 GB RAM and ATI Radeon X700 running on XP - so this should not get me into trouble ;-)

ATI + Spring = Issues. Also, werent some users reporting that hitting ctrl+shift (or sth like that) was triggering a keyboard layout switch, and giving epic slowdown?

and disable dynamic clouds if you have them on.

Why are dynamic clouds in spring anyway? The settings program should have a big warning sign next to dynmic clouds saying "don't use this if you don't want to lose 60 fps for nothing"

Also, he said he disabled all graphic settings so I don't think dynamic clouds are the problem, maybe you should try to update drivers, or try older drivers.

I find some cards do crazy things with that one "compress textures" or whatever setting. When I first tried Spring on my new machine, everything was black, until I turned that on... and then things worked fine except on DSD, where it would freak out and crawled if I looked at certain parts of the map. Then I fiddled a bit and I turned it back off and everything was hunky-dory.

Maybe it's the grass?

The B key is impressive

Stats show 1 fps and the percentages don't go up (0.00%) - seems like starts below 1 fps don't display correct.
Nearly all time is done in draw world.
Sim time starts with >25000 s, but does not change anymore.
Compress textures is off, dynamic clouds is off.
I also tried with lowest graphics settings and low res - same effect.

Keyboard-layouts except german have been removed - I hated changing the layout by hotkey before

i have the same problem... only 1fps on emain macha, as well as one of the charlie in the hills versions, i believe the first one.

and i've tried the same sorts of things to fix it, tweaking my graphics and spring settings, but to no avail... i know a few other players get the same glitch on the same maps.

strangely enough, i think that this only happened since the .76 series of spring, previously to that i was able to play both maps without any difficulty.

i am running almost essentially the same system, a single core with an ATI card. just letting you know you're not alone.

That's so true for me too.

Thanks :-)

I hope the effect goes by with the next beta.
Maybe I should try to get a nightly build from the source.

Just registered to let you know I have exactly the same issues as the two guys above me.

I had the exact same problem, to fix it change your water settings to "reflective" AKA /water 1 (anything but Basic?) .

If you then get a weird graphics bug on other maps (you may or may not), disable LUAshaders
I posted some stuff in viewtopic.php?f=11&t=17055

thanks for the diagnosis...

unfortunately, when i play a map with reflective water, i only get about a steady 15 fps... so although you've deduced where the gremlin lies, it doesn't really help me so much :(

maybe someone can fix water 1 for us <3

bumpwater on minimal settings takes same performance as /water 0

bumpmapped water gave me 5 fps...

which, although 500% better, is still hardly playable

Perfect! :-)
Thank you for your help, that does the trick.
FPSManager of BA always slowed me down, because it starts with /water 0 - deadly in my case.
So I'm going to use an own FPSManager-lua-script.
