Revised GUI

Post by Aqo »

Am I the only one bothered by the current GUI that all Spring mods use?
I want to have different GUI on the mods I'm using, but I don't really know how to mod a mod, so I'll just post a GUI suggestion:

I personally believe that commands like "wait", "clear group", and the maneuver thing are obsolete. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you should have an option to hide them. This GUI aims for simplicity and being small and easily understandable.
Right now it uses only two lines, but obviously this can easily be stretched to three or four to fit more buttons. However that is less necessary when you have less useless buttons overall.

Well, BA (or whatever <something>A your screenshot was taken in) is not all Spring mods, you know... :) Check out PURE - it's got a completely different GUI, for ex.

I think every element in the GUI should be customizable. Allowing users to resize elements, add/remove buttons, move them around and hide them.

Very far from it, except the clear group bit. I use both the maneuver and wait quite often.

You can remake the GUI independently from a mod, using Lua.

Oh? How would I go about doing that?

Also, what kind of uses do Wait and Maneuver have? What can they do that you can't do by simply manually controlling the unit's movement?

you can work with beherith and wisse maybe, you could make a new GUI for BA (if you change the icon colors to fit the gui you can't make a general gui for spring) , but don't just make a part of the gui otherwise it will just be awful

anyway what you did is nice but the hard part is to make the real gui :)

a New gui for BA would be cool, keep it simple, but dont get rid of usefull commands!

Perhaps make it look like TA, that would be awesome =)

When was the last time anyone pressed a button that doesn't have a hotkey assigned to it?

Man, I can't imagine it's all that hard to make a GUI... I'll need to look into this as people seem to complain incessantly about it... then I will get bored and lazy and forget about it.

How do you modify the structure of the menu like that? I know how to replace the graphics through fbi files but I don't know how to actually touch the menu's layout. I assume it's stored in some LUA files...?

Some info is stored in ctrlpanel.txt in you luaui dir. Try tweaking that. Also, look at our resource bar widget in the lua forums.

My idea was to string the GUI horizontally, 3 rows, instead of vertically. That way you can correspond GUI keys directly to their equivalent keyboard location, making for much more logical and understandable hotkey systems.

make a gui that looks like this:
should be as transperent as possible without makign it hard ot read symbols and words on it.
http://i4.tinypic.com/8bhqnw7.jpg

all word commands should become icons and take less space.
Ill gladly use something similair to this with some delicate arm/core menu decorations.
