TA3D is a free project whose aim is to remake the engine of Total Annihilation but in real 3D, with perspective, camera management, hardware acceleration, (just like Spring), but preserving original gameplay and atmoshpere! TA3D is developped for different OS (Windows, Linux, OS X and other), current version is 0.5.0.

Site: http://www.ta3d.org

Youtube videos:

Example:

So TA3D is a remake of TA engine under GPL(that means free...) which uses original game files (means it doesn't run without *.hpi or *.ufo files from the original game, the demo or a mod). The goal? Make this great game run better on modern hardware, and bring a new features(original AI is a bit classic(too easy), units models might be more detailed, effects better and so on...).

Current version 0.5.0. allows:
- multiplayer games support with internet server
- playing original TA campaigns
- scirmish games agains multple AI
- save/load single games
- extended TA mod support (mod managment feature)
- mega-zoom feature
- powerfull 3DMeditor (TA3D utility to create/import/export units)
- many other

3DMeditor features:
- import/export 3D models (3ds,3do,3dm) 3dm - TA3D format, that storex model and texture in the same file and allows UV mapping.
- transparency support for textures
- shaders support for models
- animation (and cyclic animation support) - allows using of animated 3D map features like swing trees and others.
- many other

The purpose of this thread is to tell TA-fans, that there is such project like TA3D, and if someone willing to help with it development - it would be very nice :) There are many things that could be done to make it better - look here http://ta3d.darkstars.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=518

Current windows version version 0.6.0. a13: ftp://downloads.ta3d.org/binaries/windows/dev/0.6

Suggestions are wellcome :)

That 3DMeditor - you mean it works like a fully developed Servo too so that I can animate things in there and it spits out a bos script? That would be the ultimate awesomeness as pretty much any tool (even here for Spring) somehow evaded this task a bit...

Playing the original campaign also sounds interesting - I might dig my TA CDs out once again for that... :-)

1. Create a FREE engine, that allows to have TA in 3D, preserving original gameplay, atmosphere and feeling of TA-style RTS (already done, small fixes left)
2. Have support for most of TA mods (with minor fixes, many mods now work fine in TA3D (TAWP, TA Excess, Talon and so on...) (already done, small fixes left) This allows TA3D to be highly-modable engine with LUA support...
3. Create set of FREE resources, to make TA3D a full free game (here TA3D can be shipped like different game - TA-style, any races, any map, any rules...). Currently we have almost all we need, but a few things remains - explosion sprites or 3D models, sounds, mouse pointers, that still are from TA files...
4. Create High-Definition resources (maps, units, sprites, 3d models...) to enhance visual/gameplay perfomance, preserving TA-style gameplay.
5. ... well... improve :)

Something like that.

A free opensource engine that starts out as TA remake in 3D, and eventually aims to become independent from TA IP. I have heard of something like that before, somewhere.... HMMMMMMMMMM...

Some healthy competition is surely welcome, from players perspective. Good luck. I'll definently check it out if I find my OTA CD's.

Have you considered a multiplayer lobby/server system like spring's - some convenient way to arrange online games?

We`ve already have running internet server - like battle.net, that arranges all the multiplayer games throught internet between TA3D clients on different OS`es (windows, linux, OSx at the same time).

And thanks for nice words :)

Good lord guys, it's not competition. This engine is built with entirely different purposes in mind, and tbh is damn cool. Does TA3d still have to have the TA cd's to work? I have owned 4 copies of ta in the past 10 years, have the books from 2, have the battle tactics cd, and have no idea where the rest are... Found the box for my comm pack that I bought 5 years ago for 2 bucks.

Not exactly CD. You just need to copy totala1.hpi & totala2.hpi to /ta3d/resource/ folder to play with basic TA set of units (evolva models).

If you add of ccdata.ccx (from Core contingency) and rev31.gp3 (appears in TA folder after patch 3.1c is installed) you can play with full set of TA CC units (evolva models).

Here is full info about which files are needed to run in full or small configuration http://ta3d.darkstars.co.uk/help/

It shows an open server if someone created one. Currenty we have not many testers, so most of the time serverlist is empty :( Sorry for that, but you can still play scirmish or campaign games. To play online games - we chose a time on our forum or using irc channel.

Zufzuf, could you PLEASE fix the reflective water shader. It looks incredibly ugly right now.

I have currently a few ideas to improve that water shader, mainly adding a height map texture to allow depth effects and having real waves :).

In order to fix the squary look of the sun blinks I'll have to rework the model a bit ... it looks like a precision problem, and maybe this can be optimized to run a bit faster.

I don't suppose there's a chance of you giving the files needed to play?

We provide a package containing the files from TA demo for Linux in our repositories (look for tademo) and Doors has made packages for windows containing those files from the demo.

Soon we`ll release TA3D with free set of resources, and you`ll be able to play without anything else :)
