Wings 3d, 3ds max, but where's Blender?

Post by Tribulexrenamed »

Where is the Blender UV mapping tutorial?
I see tutorials for these other products, but I use Blender. Can someone help me learn how to do this in a way that does not involve individually placing and scaling every face of the model? Thanks

You have to keep in head that uv/mapping method will stay the same on wings 3dsmax maya or blender like everything in 3D. You can read wings uvmapping tuto an apply it blender. You just have to find the same fonctions in blender that has been used in wings tuto. ;)

But you can find lots of blender tutorials using google ;)
here is the best one so far :

Well don't think that all this UV-mapping stuff is totally Spring specific or something like that - it's a standard technique and because of that you'll find tons of tutorials for your software out there...

Especially Blender has tons of free stuff floating around. Just type "blender uv mapping tutorial" into Google and enjoy the countless links. Heck - there even are video tutorials on Youtube for this like THAT ONE. Go ahead and look through specific forums and use Google to find stuff - you most certainly won't get the ultimate tutorial list for all kinds of software here...

Yeah, I already tried that, and I still cannot figure it out. All tuts and shit are like for older versions and so much is different in between versions.

Basically, I am wondering if there is anything in blender that makes it easier to uv map than individually arranging the faces. I know how to do it, its just a pain in the ass.

Ditch blender and use wings for UV mapping

Ehm you know of LSCM mapping? You don't have to unwrap one face after the other manually...

Really? I love Blender's LSCM mapping system. Slice slice slice, pin, unwrap, pin, unwrap. Simple.

How 2 maek it work?

I do lcsm unwrap and it scatters my polies in a retarded way.

By slice do you mean seams?

What is pin?

You mean you get lots of single faces floating around as an "island" of their own? If that's the case you haven't understood LSCM yet. It works like you'd have your model made out of paper: You can define seams which react like you'd take your paper model plus a scissor, cut along that edges and unfold those pieces afterwards...

So you have to think of which parts should be "islands" of their own on your UV space and mark the specific edges for the LSCM algorithm. As I said: have a look at some tutorials. Here - have a look at my first result with Google explaining Blender's LSCM functionality:

I meant seam when I said slice. And pin lets you tell it where to put those polies in a non-retarded way. That is, in the mapping window, you selected a vertex and select "pin" and that vertex is now pinned to that position - next time you unwrap, the vertex will remain in that position, and the mapping algorithm will work around that. So, if you have a squarish section of mapping you want in the top-left-corner, you pin the four corners and drag them to the top left. Next unwrap will put those in the corner. So you it iteratively - your first unwraps will be fugly, but you use some pins to make them nice.

Pins are nice since they're like bones for your mapping - if you make changes to your model later, the pins will remain so it's not as hard to move your mapping around to make some new room and re-unwrap.
