Split the LUA forum?
Not sure this thread should go here, but i propose to split Lua forum in two.
One for discussion, questions, "make me a widget please" threads, whining how X ruines gameplay on Y, and that kind of thing.
And another *strictly* for threads started by developers about their *released* widgets, with links to widget etc from first post (or attachments), and with feedback/bug reports/widget discussion in the threads.
I think that would make it much easier to find widgets.

+1 i guess, it would be easier to find what u want

Re: Split the LUA forum?
+1 so that code release threads won't get pushed back by 5 or 6 pages of other stuff.
Re: Split the LUA forum?
Why not create a wiki section that does this, and have a sticky thread that points to it?
Re: Split the LUA forum?
Extra thing to manage/update. Same reason why not create wiki section to separate say mod development threads from spring development threads.... because that really belongs to different forums.ILMTitan wrote:Why not create a wiki section that does this, and have a sticky thread that points to it?
Re: Split the LUA forum?
Perhaps a generic content development forum with a set fo sub forums:
- Releases
- Projects
- Scripting
- Requests

Re: Split the LUA forum?
The forums are already getting a bit convoluted, with a number of forums not really attracting many posts (eg, mapping forum). I'm not really against the 2-forum split, but further would just be a bit much I think.
Also, the whole 'list of released widgets' could (and should) really be maintained in a stickied thread, as well as a wiki page.

Hmmmm
why not split the feature request forum in two? :)
(and yeah the Lua forum doesn't have enough ppl to split it up in such many subforums)

Re: Split the LUA forum?
Which is why I would suggest merging a handful of forums then splitting them into new forums/subforums that make more sense.
I would make a lua script request sub forum in here anyway thats actually a link tot he feature request forum.

Re: Split the LUA forum?
I'd approve a forum similar to the mapping forum for Lua, it would filter out a lot off the bullshit
Re: Split the LUA forum?
I hate closed forums. Those are just usefull to increase the egos of some ppls ...
Re: Split the LUA forum?
I agree, closed forums are evil
Re: Split the LUA forum?
Make it open, but state the specific purpose of the forum. If anyone makes an off topic post, move it.

How much ego boosting has come from the mapping forum? Case closed.jK wrote:I hate closed forums. Those are just usefull to increase the egos of some ppls ...

none, its relatively lifeless and most mappers don't even have access. Nobody has posted there since july and activity there is lower than anywhere else in the forum. More posts have been made in this threads than have been made in that forum in the last 6 months.
Re: Split the LUA forum?
WTF closed forums?
What i proposed was to split this forum into
1: one where developers make threads about their widgets, and receive feedback/bug reports/etc/etc as replies in those threads. Wiki, closed forum, etc. etc. thats *entirely* besides the point here. Wiki isnt a way to provide feedback on stuff, and it doesnt allow easy author-only control. Closed forum for that is totally ridiculous, afterall its for announcements from devs and feedback from users.
That could inherit name "Lua Scripts" , or get different name. This has to be moderated, with wrong threads moved out, possibly with repeated offenders if any banned from making new threads in that forum.
2: other where majority of stuff in the lua forum now (threads like tis one, or where people ask technical questions about lua itself so that argh can answer those incorrectly, etc etc) would go.
That could be named Lua Development or just Lua Buzz or the like.
I think theres not enough posts here to warrant splitting into more than 2. While it could make sense to separate the "make me widget please" threads from technical discussion, most of the technical discussion is hardly technical here anyway.
But i overally agree that "make me a widget" should go into feature requests. "Make me a widget" seem to be the most common kind of thread here.
It should not be a "Lua feature requests", because one requesting a feature does not typically have expertise to decide whenever its best implemented in Lua or as change to spring engine, and should not be expected to.

Re: Split the LUA forum?
At a minimum discussion of released Lua widgets should have their own forum to make it easier to find them. Either the widget authors can make threads for their own widgets, or a user could make it, but limit it to one thread per widget maximum unless there's enough posts in a thread to make it worth splitting it into separate topics like "WidgetX tech support" "WidgetX bug reports" "WidgetX user discussion" or something like that.
That reminds me, the map forum should be opened and renamed "Map Development" or "Map Discussion" and the "User Map Discussion" should be renamed "Map Releases" for similar reasons to my Lua split up proposal. It'll make it way easier to see and discuss new content, it will make it easier to find stuff by just searching that one forum, etc.AF wrote:none, its relatively lifeless and most mappers don't even have access. Re: Split the LUA forum?
I agree with the last few posts. Mod/Script requests really should go under "feature requests" where people actually interested in implementing new feature suggestions would go to find them. Requests should be banned and moved from all other forums.
A split into "Script Help" and "Script Announcements" would also be beneficial I believe, even if they don't see equal use. It's just a better arrangement for developers in general as it reduces the amount of noise.
