Move points, area selection

Post by MrAstrup »

What I think could be extremely cool would be if you could choose a unit that you want to order and then click on the map afterwards. This will then be the move point for that specific unit. In this way you can have several move point for the different units, which makes it easy to sort the units if many different units are being produced in one factory. It will also make it easy to group units of the same type being produced at different factories.

Holding certain key down afterwards and moving the mouse over the unit pic, will then reveal the move point selected for the different units. A button to reset move point will then also be needed, I think.

This will lower the micro management a lot I think.

It could also be extended to e.g the mine layer and in stead of clinking the map after you have selected a mine type, you will then drag a rectangle. The mine of one type will then be placed in that rectnagle. Holding the shift key or something similar down, will then enable you to select another mine and cover an area with those etc.

What do you say ?

All of this can be done with the GroupAI interface. Sufficive to say if somebody fixed the New GUI code we could create a much better UI for it.

You mean, you'd like to be able to assign waypoints etc from factories on a per-unit-type basis? Flashes go to point 1, samsons to point 2, jeffies patrol between points three and four? Sounds cool.

later game you can just use factories waypoints/rally points to do this. and i think this feature would be a biatch to program and not have much value. if you think: select, left-click (move), patrol, left click (patrol point) is difficult to micro try playing RA /C&C Generals, etc. no patrol command so you have to do EVERYTHING manually. THAT is annoying level of micro, patrol command really reduces the amount of micro you have to do.
atm i think that spring is quite micro intensive early/mid game (raiding) but later on becomes really easy to micro because of the sheer volume of commands you have available (ctrl+z being my fave)

What I'd like to see/would find more useful is if you could not only make a factory into a group, so all units it produces are by default of that group, but also make specific units a group.

So each unit usually has the specific group 'X' that means it relies on the facotry. But if you scroll your mouse over a unit and hit control something, then that unit by default belongs to that group.

Then, each group can be assigned a way point the same way it is now - you hit alt+4 for group for, then right click somewhere. Currently this orders all selected units there and assigns factory waypoints there. Well it would still do this, but also all units that are built which belong to that group move there.
