does quality scale with settings

Post by Manoa »

I've been checking the cpu usage of spring and I think that the answer is no, I've tried everything on highest and everything on lowest and realized that the quality of the image that you get in-game does not vary as much as the cpu usage (and perhaps also some gpu usage), the only noticeable difference that I found was the ground decals and vehicle tracks, the rest is more or less a waste of resources.

the other thing is the gpu usage, I've been running some tests and it seems that in the game the gpu was only used at 25% at all time, the cpu was of corse used 100% all the time, but something doesn't make sense, if there is no upper framerate limit why there is only 220 fps and only 25% usage ? why isn't it 880 fps and 100% usage ?

that has to do with dual core support, and also if you have 25% usage and 220 fps that doesnt mean that with 100% you have 880fps there are more factors like your proccesor

hmm... i think spring wastes some calculation then, because my screen max FPS is 60 so it shouldnt use 100% of cpu since my screen max FPS is lower than the FPS in game, which is like 200-400, depending how long the game is...

actually increase your resolution add antialias add anisotropic increase the shadow resolution, the view radius, and the unit details and you'll see the difference !

spring is cpu limited not gpu limited

I was running at 1600x1200, there is no aliasing at that resolution, the anisotropic was on but it didn't make any difference only some on the terrain at that resolution, the unit details and shadow resolution do not have any effect, and viewradius only changes the terrain accuracy and beyond a setting of 100 has no effect

is it possible the because of cpu limit it creates a gpu limit ? I see on some games that gpu usage is around 70-80 namely speedball and speedmetal it happens most but ONLY at very start of game, after a while whehn the in-game cpu monitor shows around 10-20% the gpu auto switched to a lower speed (powerplay) because the game was using less than 40% of gpu, then the gpu usage drops further

the spec is 4MB 65nm conroe 3400 mhz (C1E/EIST 2400 mhz), hd 3870 972/1250 mhz (powerplay: #1: 250/400 #2: 648/800, #3: 972/1250)

Spring uses AF automatically at the maximum setting (16x) if your card supports it and the driver allows for it.
