My computer has gone retarded for the last fucking time...

Ok, so today I have spent all evening doing a hd scan because my computer is gay... ok really the harddrive is bad.. but the point is that I am sick of this machine and rather then fix all of it I am going to look at putting together a list so in a month or so I can replace this old girl. As a pc she is fine but for higher performance needs she is not good enough.

So my concern is this. I droped about a grand getting my 8000 series, powersupply and new processor to see NO IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING WHAT SO EVER! So I don't want to get fucked again. I want to go nvidia and amd/intel doesn't really matter. What will give me the BEST performance in spring?

im running a q6600 OCd to 3.6 ghz (from stock 2.4 ghz)
2gb ram (got 4 but not using 2 leaving them as spares still runnign 32bit xP)
8800 gt 1024mb SLI (tho only using 1 atm for testing purposes)
1tb SATA II Hardrive

my spring performance is amazing tbh 60 fps with vsync set on 60 at all times pretty much unless big fights will never drop below 25 (running max settings and dynamic water to) so always playable i also run bloom now and still always playable even tho it generally halves ur fps

id really recommend the 8 series but u seem to be having problems (dunno why tho) they are the best cards for spring so far out of the ones ive tried

also INTEL > AMD just cos of cache and overclocking ability alone

DDR 2 is still the way to go imo DDR3 is expensive and not worth it yet so a good set of DDR 2 with nice timings will be great

Q6600 CPU Is dirt cheap and with a good heatsink like mine (cost me only 35 dollars) u get about 30 degrees centigrade lower temps so u can rilly push the overlock (1.2 ghz <3) and watch it fly

Mobo imo the IP35 pro is amazing (especially for overlocking) its not an SLI mobo (but SLI sucks imo i regret it :/) but this thing is amazing

all the parts i mentioned are cheap and effective and you can run all commercial games aswell as spring

tbh any benefits of an 8800 in spring aren't really going to be seen until the next release at best. The various improvements and speed ups as well as the new threading are what will make the difference.

not really true the 8800 compared to my past gfx cards has floored all of them at spring. Apart from the fact im running on max i still have double/triple(even more) the fps i was running on medium settings on my other card

so with the new version it will be even more pwn but its still an improvement from everything else imo

One should also note a handful of improvements that were made to the current spring that had a small impact on 8800 users.

You probably should check out the ATI's new 4850 ($200) and 4870 ($300, release next week) cards. They might just offer the best value for the money. Their openGL performance seem decent too. Also, Nvidia is dropping the price of their 9800 GTX to $200, and releasing the 9800 GTX+ for $230. All of these are worth checking out. The Nvidia GT200 series are definitely not the best value for the money.

If you are going for top performance regardless of cost, you'll want GT280 SLI. That's like $1300 bucks for the graphics cards alone. On the other hand, you can brag that your computer has at least 2.8 billion transistors

If you want to see improvements in Spring, bug the developers or else learn to develop. If you'da asked I coulda told ya a better GPU isn't going to help you. The game's CPU-bottlenecked to about 45 fps maximum on most computers once you start actually playing. Going from a 7800 GS to a 8800 GTS, which gained me about 60% in other games, gained me 1-2 fps in Spring. Going from a Pentium 4 @ 2.4ghz to a Core 2 Duo @ 3 ghz gained me about 7 FPS or something... not very much. The pathfinding and LoS calculations just absolutely kill any hope of performance like a normal game. I get better FPS in SupCom than I do in Spring XTA.

Waait a minute... I warned you about this like 3 years ago or something. Still think my GEM shots comparing 150 3,000 triangle units versus 150 75 triangle units and getting the same FPS is an exaggeration?

it's shadows that kill spring FPS wise, 7800GTX, 150 fps with them off, 60 with them on, cpu speed has never been a problem for me, got a 3 year old athlon x2 4400 and other people start lagging long before i do.

Ive noticed that since earlier spring releases, my fps is alot lower now throghout games than it used to be, the only change to my hardware over 3 years has been an extra gig of ram.

TBH if you are playing a teamgame, someone else is bound to start lagging before you if you have a newish cpu, there is bound to be somone playing with a P4 or athlon XP, you are far more likely to notice fps slowdown long before you notice simulation slowdown if you play a game by yourself.

Honestly, sounds like your computer is plenty good, feature-wise - maybe you should look into the possibility of the mobo or PSU being defective, if it's eating HDDs? Then just get a new drive.

I mean then, rather than getting a new computer you don't really need you could be getting a nice wacom or something to make working on it easier.

What I am asking guys, is if the newer Nvidia offerings are good to go for spring, I do not know anyone with one of the 9000 series to see how it is running and generally I am wondering if an intel might be a better choice then amd this time around. I am going to end up building a new machine soon anyway but the idea is that I would like to lean the build towards a better possible FPS in spring. I figured some of you may have had some hardware suggestions.
