Well, they are already the shortest ranged unit in the game, draco. anything armed except perhaps the GD scout can kill them 1 on 1.

It's really effective to rush your allies with as well, just ask Fang

That probably won't work anymore, since they no longer damage allied units.

No it still works.. see its not a matter of doing damage to allies, more of a matter of sharing said units with the enemy AI once they had reached the center of Peet's base.
