Making TOP 10 Video Game Composer movie list!

Post by Pendrokar »

I am making a TOP 10 video on greatest video game composers, which will include 50 seconds of 4/5 songs each composer's music(that is 10 seconds of a song).
It seems I need help!
I Have chosen 6 by know that are:
1) Frank Klepacki - Made music for Westwood Studio games!
http://www.frankklepacki.com/
2) Nobuo Uematsu - Made music for Square Soft games(mostly Final Fantasy)
3) Will Loconto - Probably haven't heard of him, but he made music for Dominion and Daikatana which were great though the games weren't!
http://www.willloconto.com/
4) MediaStudio(3 three composers in one group) - made rock and metal songs for Painkiller game.
5) Jeremy Soule - No comment needed for this forum users.
6) Stefan Poiss - Made songs for the game Motorcity(in raw midi type). There are about 31 and almost all are very different!

I am thinking of adding:
1) Bob King - Made songs for Heroes Of Might And Magic(should check if he made for Might & Magic also!)
2) Jesper Kyd - Made songs for Assassins Creed(haven't heard any), Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, Hitman Series and Kyne & Lynch.
3) StarControl 2/Starcontrol 2: The Urquan Masters composer teams - The original or the remixes!
So know that I'm not talking only about game theme songs such as Halo, Farcry and Metal Gear Solid, but composers that made a lot of great songs!

Because I was born in 1989 and got a PC in 1996 or earlier don't remember and I don't think that any Nintendo platforms ever stepped into Latvia!

Go get a copy of Frank Klepacki's Stomp, which was originally made for Tiberian Sun but remained unreleased. No need to include anything else. :P

Google up Bart Klepka, that guy is not a composer but instead he remixes game music, old and new games alike. Some of his stuff is pretty cool.

iirc, the music of StarControl 2 was actually done by contests - so most of those guys were just hobbyist MOD composers who did it for a paltry prize purse. Awesome, eh?

And you really also have to look at those late-90s games when CD audio was new, so most PC developers were just hiring any wierd music talent they could find to cut an album they could throw on as a soundtrack.

For example, the Cold Storage soundtrack on WipEout, Sonic Mayhem on Quake 2, whoever the hell did Descent 2, the surf-guitar-music god Dick Dale's work on Rocket Jockey, horror director John Carpenter's composition in The Sentinel Returns, Pitch Shifter and Rob Zombie's stuff on Twisted Metal 3, and so on.

Now game music is more professionally designed to be thematic and fit with the games better, so the soundtracks tend to be more subtle and better meshed... but don't stand on their own as well - but back in those days, a lot of games were also really good albums.

Dan Wentz probably is another good one with his music for the Descent and Freespace series as well as things like Red Faction...

Alexander Brandon
Inon Zur

Meh, those are the only ones I can think of at the moment, both people you REALLY should know who are.

Seconding Koji kondo, he'd probably be my #1. Also seconding Frank Klepacki and Jeremy Seoule of course, and I guess Nobuo Uematsu has to be included - although his work on Chrono Trigger was better than One Winged Angel, in my opinion.

Jason Hayes was responsible for much of Blizzard soundtracks, but I'm unsure whether I would include him or not. He's certainly better than average.

There are SO many epic Nobuo tracks. I don't really even like one winged, there's lots of other stuff to choose from though.

Rob Hubbard, man!

Also I think Kondo is more important than Uematsu.

Eric Brosius.
System Shock 2.
'nuff said.

"Command 3" or "Ops 1" always starts playing in my head whenever I walk into a dark, confined area. His music fit the game like a glove, and the game just isn't scary with the music off. It just wouldn't have been System Shock 2 without Eric.
