Texturing with cs3 - Worth the trouble?
Well I originally learned to to truly do texturing using deep paint 3d (I'm talking "real" texturing, not random panel stuffage) thanks to my very patient teacher, Lathan Stanley.
That said, deep paint 3d has a really really bad interface. Given that cs3 can now import obj files I thought it would be neat to use it. I gave it another shot last night and got stuck pretty much where I did the last time... Essentially, you open the obj with cs3, bam, 3d model/layer. However the large shortcoming is that you paint on the model. That's all fine and good, but the options for it suck.
For example, in deep paint 3d I can select a face, or a series of faces and paint only within that. In cs3 the closest thing to that seems to be the magic wand, which just isn't nearly as good.
Meh I'll stop. I was gonna write a small novel about it but tldr... Hao does I, and is it worth the trouble?

i wish it easier to texture in photoshop :/ on models

If I were you forb I would probably stay with photoshop, as far as I know deep paint is more for people who want to paint their model.

Both BodyPaint 3D and DeepPaint 3D are good, I prefer BodyPaint myself as it works seamless with PSDs and is a few less clicks than DeepPaint (uses a filter to transmit layers between programs) and the interface, while not perfect still is good. You can paint in 2D and 3D. I still do most of the work in PS, though.

I always have had the ability... Time is the limiting factor.
Some of the heroes may get painted if I happen to get bored.
But speed and efficiency Are the most important things when doing something this massive, this quickly.

If you want fullbright shots download the game. I don't use wings to apply textures, so "Full Bright" shots are what you can get in the spring engine, take it or leave it.

I really like the CS3's 3D feature. It removes the need for people from having to keep switching back and forth from Photoshop and the 3D program to check the progress, which is somewhat annoying since both programs use alot of system resources.
Now I just wish I could afford getting CS3, I haven't made up for the cost of getting CS2 yet.
Tried Deep Paint 3D, didn't like the interface. I find it easier to visualise while painting on a flat 2d tex anyway.

Doesn't seem worth the money to save me the 2 seconds of my life in switching to upspring, or whatever 3D program - and seems to have limited 3D control and functionality.
Still, it's a good step forward towards photoshop becoming a meta-scale modeller/texturer type program. I foresee a merger in the near future with a proper 3D program, just like max has merged with autocad for planning/3D crossover.

Zsinj: of course its not worth the money if you look at the 3D support alone, but i'm using it for alot of other work-related projects as well, so CS3 saves alot of time on some tedium in my current work and generally gives a more efficient workflow. And no, Adobe didn't pay me any money for saying that.

I guess if you're using the advanced elements of PS - but I doubt I've even scratched the surface of what my version (CS2) has to offer. Photoshop is also prohibitively expensive for an entry-level user, and elements is awful. Which strikes me as an odd marketing move, though I guess PS hardly needs marketing these days.

if you already use 'shop the modeling thing is icing on the cake. and a student copy of cs3e is only 300-400

I'm employed full-time and I can't afford that. I sure as hell wouldn't have been able to stump up that sort of cash for it when I was at uni.
TBH, I think the ease of pirating such software is part of the universality and surviveability of PS. You grow up learning only that program, so when you enter your professional life and actually need to pay for such things, you will not go for a competitor - you will go for the program you've used all your life. I think they really ought to price student software with that in mind.

I've had CS3 and went back to PS7! 
Zsinj: have you ever tried to overwrite a texture while upspring is running? I need to quit it every time I update a texture.

yeah upspring puts a file lock on the texture. Failclient does the same with mods
