Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
I suggest this thread to be used for technical discussion about possible new site.
To kick off, https://spring.clan-sy.com/svn/spring/site/trunk is up now on http://newspring.clan-sy.com .
Also I made a 'Site' project in mantis (use combobox on top right to switch project) and I am going to add things I see missing in the current newspring site there, so we can easily keep track of what still needs doing, what bugs there are etc. (as opposed to committing a todo list in SVN, which, in my experience won't get updated anyway)

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
umm, is this the finished new site or is af going to be working on it some more?
Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
The site is functional as is, and could be completed using nothing but a web browser.
Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
What happened with all the cool designed stuff in the web site proposals thread?
Is a wiki with background really better than what we have now?

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
jpegs, and static html cant do the same job as a wiki and a forum.
But I do not think getting into a discussion about the other proposals or a fanfare over why cant we have this would be very productive. Death by discussion is not desirable nor needed.

nope it's even worse ...jcnossen wrote:What happened with all the cool designed stuff in the web site proposals thread?

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
The current newspring frontpage isn't the final frontpage at all yet.
And don't worry it won't replace current site until it isn't at least as good

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
So, get Gnome to finish the job he said he'd do, and build a PHP script to go get random Mod of the Day entries implemented, etc. It can't be that hard- you just need a Wiki page holding the relevant entries... something like this:jpegs, and static html cant do the same job as a wiki and a forum.
[GAME ENTRY]
Game Name: P.U.R.E.
Game Fluff: Blahblahblah
Mod of the Day graphic: http://blahblah.jpg
Mods graphic: http://blahblah.jpg
Where the PHP script goes through that list, gets a count of all entries, then randomly selects one Mod of the Day and 8 mods, puts the graphics and text into the relevant places, and it's done.
Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
Not needed. roflcopters design is roflcopters design and belongs in a dedicated dokuwiki template. I ahve made this ncie and clear.
Yet nobody has stepped up and created this template. Therefore there must be no demand for it. Please do not attempt to squash this point unless your post has a dokuwiki template attatched to it, you'd just be stirring if you did.
I have also made it clear in the past that putting a dedicated list of games on the frontpage is redundant because there's already a games page, you would do far better to advertize the games page than to break that space up into lots of tiny boxes that make little or no sense.
In the mean time, whatre you people doing reading this thread, your supposed to be filling up the site with delicious content, chop chop!

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
Why an entire template, when we've already seen that's not necessary, and would add enormous amounts of work? I assume you have a good, solid technical reason why someone is going to be required to edit a bunch of CSS, etc., when we've already seen the design displayed correctly, and it probably just needs the PHP as I've described to function?Yet nobody has stepped up and created this template. Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
That makes no sense, it is not good because no one has done it in dokuwiki theme format yet? I think that is because we thought you were as it is your site work.AF wrote: Yet nobody has stepped up and created this template. Therefore there must be no demand for it.
That is paper thin man.
Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
because it would be unwise to shunt 100 lines of css markup and overrides at the top of each and every wiki page. Especially when the browser has to laod the template then load an entirely new set of css styling and imagery as soon as its laoded that hides all the ioriginal content.
Its utter waste on a massive scale.
Imagine buying a new house. Only for every room you bought another house and used the room in there. So when you used the ------- youd walk to the ------- then walk out the house across the road and into house n#2 and use that ------- #2, then you'd walk out go back to the original house with your dinner go into the dining room sit at the table, stand up walk to house n#3 goto dining table #3 and sit down and eat your dinner. Now is ti just me or does that make no sense?
roflcopters design is not a design inside my template, it is a total new design for a total new template and as such needs its own template folder. Nobody has created such a template. It is not rocket science.
Smoth, nobody has demonstrated conclusively that anyone but a handful of active forum posters actually thinks roflcopters design is pretty. Whatsmore your all ignoring em when I hint that we should get a site up and running as quickly as possible and deal with chasing perfection later.
Ive made my stance clear and its quite amusing that for the last month people have been totally ignoring it. Let em make it clear, this is not up for discussion, I will not pander to calls for what I consider an incomplete design with obvious flaws. If you want it you know what you have to do, I wont implement it for you.
Can a moderator please split these posts out and lock the split thread? Theyre derailing the whole process.

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
would it be that much for you to make one similar to what he did?
Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
I have no interest in tackling roflcopters design, I never really did, and I was offended by the notion. I dont see this changing for the foreseeable future.
People think by pushing for it theyll get what they want. If people keep pushing Im more inclined to let the site go the way of the dinosoars than have all that crap heaped on me.
So let me make it clear one last time, I dont care about any logical fallacies or moral objections or aesthetic opinions you may throw at me:
Over my dead body

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
so indignant. Look man, I am just saying, compared to your past designs that i have seen from you, I think this one looks largely incomplete.
Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
Offended by what? That he made a visual design that people liked?I have no interest in tackling roflcopters design, I never really did, and I was offended by the notion.
I mean... I lost that contest, and you didn't even participate, and the contest was about visual design, not code, and we all know this, so what?
Whether you're offended is irrelevant. And the popular vote, as few people participated, etc., can be easily addressed, right now, by calling for a formal vote in the Lobby- just shoot 'em a Forum link, show my design, RoflCopter's, and anybody else who wants a go, and winner wins, and screw waiting around.
The arguments about CSS are more relevant, but 100 lines of code? Who cares? That's less than the size of even a fairly small GIF.
Worth fixing later, but certainly not a reason to not go anywhere first.
PHP from Gnome, and a working method that we can use to make things happen, is a reasonable requirement. Rewriting the CSS is not. Gimme a break, that's going to have to happen at the very end, as part of cleanup- what we need right now are working designs, not technical perfection.

Re: Site (technical, artwork stuff goes in Art forum)
We already have technical perfection and a working site. Im not going to reinvent the wheel because you asked for it.
Get into your head what your priorities are. Getting a working site up and running is more important that making a masterpiece the first time round to showcase.
Moderators? Split and lock?
