I don't have much of a clue about how CEGs work, and the wiki page is quite out of date...

Well imo there isn't much that could be updated here. Just print out the projectile.txt like it's described there and have a look at the possible generators you can use. The given options should be self-explanatory then and the only options which are not are explained can be looked up HERE and HERE...

Apart from that you also can use mods as a very good learning source although you shouldn't start with that complex nuke FX from CA for example...
