Thud!

Post by SinbadEV »

So, I'm sure out there another Springer has managed to get hooked on Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels and if you have managed to get to books 29-30 (Going Postal and Thud!) you will have heard about the game of the same as it exists in the novel.

As it turns out the game was invented by an associate of Mr. Pratchett and exists in our world (it was created prior to it's mention in the novels as a merchandising tie-in with the books).

Wikipedia has a nice concise treatment of the game and rules:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thud_%28game%29

Like other similar board games (chess, checkers, go) it would be relatively easy to play by email, if anyone knows the game or would like to give it a try you could post or PM or whatever.

Yeah, but did you make a bristol board Thud! board and set? (equally hard-core would be actually purchasing an official one)

Terry is made of pure win. Is Thud! a balanced game tho? Couldnt really decide based on the rules. Maybe we need a BThud :)

Already a free "released source" version of it out there.

The game it moderately balanced but slightly in favor of the Trolls. The key is that you must play two "rounds" one as dwarves (dwarfs?) and then one as Trolls and take the cumulative score (4 points for surviving trolls, 1 point for surviving dwarves) of the two matches to determine a winner.

Still think my favorite is Small Gods... though Hogfather was quite clever.

TP is awesom, i hope he gets one more sam vimes book out, like a "the fall of sam vimes" because he blatantly isnt that interested in his wife.

and night watch is easily the best book he ever wrote, its like the ultimate social commentry of all time. theres just so much in that book.

the thud board game released is stupid, the trolls always win.

Have you read "Thud!"? Seriously it's supposed to be one-sided. The Trolls always win so you need to play 2 games, one as Trolls one as Dwarfs and count up the points (basically the dwarves always lose it's just a matter of how many trolls they can kill before being eliminated).

Or were you being purposely sarcastic in order to invoke fanatical ire.

Which extra books did you get outside the 31 "official" Discworld novels?

"Good Omens" was one of the best books I've read recently, but when I started Diskworld I was mostly disappointed. He's pretty funny, but his writing is of only moderate quality.

Skip to Night Watch or Small Gods, his writing improves quite a bit over time... Also their nice and short so your not wasting a lot of time.

dude, have you read thud? the book repeatedly states "the dwarves always win". i was saying its stupid because on the board game released, trolls always win. so each player plays each side, and the game ends a draw as both win as trolls and lose as dwarves.

his old books suck hard. gaurds gaurds is dire and to a lesser extent men at arms are pretty average. it dosnt matter though because night watch, thud, jingo, fifth elephant, last continent- all brilliant

I like his old ones too, got hooked on those. His writing does get much better towards the new ones, only to see a pretty epic fail on "The Last Hero".

Making Money had weak villains though, it wasn't all that super.
