Single Player Game, How Do I Get A Mod So I Can Start?

Post by Mike_SMD »

(this post relocated from the 'help' section of the board as I think it fits here slightly better)

Hi everyone...
I'm a recent switch over to Linux and things are still painfully difficult to figure out so please answer this question clearly and very very simply as otherwise it'll be of utterly no use.

I just installed the Linux port of TA Spring, seems to have gone fine enough... I added and used the Ubuntu repositories as per the directions.

A link to Spring Lobby is now in my games menu. When I click it the 'lobby' comes up as expected, however when I try to start a single player game it says that I have to select a mod to use and there doesn't seem to be any kind of option available to do so. The little 'mod' tab is blank -- there's nothing available to select. Do I have to download and add something else to get this to work? Or is something else wrong entirely...?

I used to love playing TA and hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for any help.

You will need to download at least one mod and one map and probably an AI if you want the computer to do something other than stand there.
All files can be found here:
http://www.unknown-files.net/spring/home/
Once you have downloaded some mods and maps the .sdz or .sd7 files go in
~/.spring/mods
~/.spring/maps
~/.spring/AI
respectively. If they are not .sdz or .sd7 they will need to be extracted. Do not extract .sdz or .sd7. Some mods may have special instructions due to being more complex. AIs are often more complex and will require following the posted instructions for their download.

I think someone was working on an installer for linux but I can't find it quickly so you might have to be satisfied for the moment with hand installing.

Yes, I still need to make a proper package for some of the more popular mods. At the moment you need to download them and shove them in ~/.spring/mods in order to play.

Ha!
Alright...

Well, thanks to the help from you fellows and the info contained in that wiki I've got things to work. Now all I've lined up on the agenda are a few quick single player games to hone the old basics and then you'll see me out there in the pseudo-world someplace...

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me get all of this sorted out, I know that sometimes it can be painful to speak in such baby-steps but I'd like to say that it really was appreciated as well as effective.

Take care everyone!
