Ancient and Recent Battles and Military Maps

Post by adeveloper.clan-sy »

I find it intriguing the possibility of playing Spring using known maps of ancient and recent battles, just to see if the ground tactics are similar.

Unfortunately, my map making technique is just non-existent. Perhaps someone here can make some maps based upon some of the maps located in the following URL? :)

Most of the maps are actual battle formation maps or maps of countries, but some of the maps are of specific battles and show geography of the immediate area of conflict.

You really need height maps, otherwise it takes a tremendous amount of time.

There's no way those maps can be of any use to create a Spring map. No texture, not any height indication, and shapes that would made them totally unplayable.

The heights do not need to be accurate to the meter, just put a hill where a hill is and put slopes where the slopes are located.

There should be a way to create a simple square Spring map which looks sort of like the following? http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/atlase ... lamis.html

and put a commander on each of the land masses (far left and far right)? For example an ARM commander where the city of Salimis is located and a COR commander where the city of Piraeus is located.

or even the geography of the Battle of Hastings, which essentially takes place on a large hill with long lazy slopes? http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/atlase ... tings.html
I realize there are no real height measurements, but if you look at the picture you can see the artist's simple height color rerpesentation (white=lowlands, beige=hill slope, dark brown=high point of hill)

The map of the Battle of Issus looks promising also (note the similar height color representation) : http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/atlase ... ments.html
The Arm Commander would be located at the city of Sochoi and the Core Commander would be located at the city of Mallus. The rivers may have to be removed however and some of the mountain choke points widened.

A Battle of Salamis!?
Muhahaha!!!
I heard today a guy saying that in the left part of the minimap of Great Divide, it seems to have the drawing of a «salami», but, this is way funnier.

adeveloper.clan-sy...

yeah, we could... and it would look like crap. no point in creating shitty horribly inacurate maps. We need some sort of satelite shot so we can do it right. If we did a hand drawn texture like that it would take MONTHS! You need to understand the textures in spring have to be huge. when you are talking about a 16,000+ pixel wide texture drawing it from scratch would take alot more work then it is worth. Then once someone releases their horribly inaccurate map there is going to be some wanker who will bitch about it being inaccurate. I have heard the complaints about OTA epic maps and THOSE at least had a base heightmap.

OH and any time you do a blend, smear etc your machine will lagg for a few minutes while it refreshes the entire image you are working on.

So in short, no it will look like crap. If we had a texture map... maybe. but it would have to be a huge image because we will lose alot when the texture is stretched.
