Quality

Post by Zoombie »

Im talking about the overall quality of a game, like the way every thing fit's together. DoW had it, Starcraft had it and i dont see why Spring souldent have it! See we need high quality sound effects, modles (and i dont mean modle's so packed with polys that they crash many computers) and map's.

See i need to make a difference between high poly count and a good grahics. See ill take Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft as two examples. See EQ2 has WAAAAAY more poly's, and its monsters look plasticy and fake. That's because the focused to much on a polycount and less on make the damn things looking good! While WoW has much lower poly counts but its monsters and cretures and stuff are very cool! Its because the designers focused on jsut plain LOOKING GOOD DAMNIT! Another Example is Doom3, whitch had BOTH looking good and high poly count. Prettty cool eh?

So realy the point is that we need high quality stuff, and dose any one have suggestions on where to look for it? Or how to make it?

Textures are what usually make or break graphics for a game, look at the GTA3 titles.

Yes, textures are very important. It's amazing how a texture can bring a model to life.

The other problem with quality art is that it needs to be consistent. When everyone is donating their time to a project, it doesn't always turn out consistent (the art style). It all comes down to building everything correctly in the right style. That is why project management is such a gift in open source circles. You need someone who can drive people to produce quality products in a stylized manner. It's a hard thing to do.

Battle for Wesnoth is the open-source game with the most consistent art style I have seen up to now. It really looks great. I think we can look up to them to know how to do great project management.

Battle For Wesnoth DOSE rock!
I especialy like the fact that it comes with Linux for FREE. Cause that realy helped cause i was going on vacation and my Dad put linux un the laptop before i could stop him, and it was what kept me from going insane from computer game withdrawl.

Actaualy though... BFW is NOT the best open source game in the way of Quality. That award gose to (Drummroll) I Found Her

"say what" I here you cry.

See I found Her is a aswome space combat game, set in the equally awsom Babylon 5 univers. right now it has a little mini-campain, taht supplies the back story for the rest of the game. See, in the game, you play as a Starfury piolet for the Earth Allience starnavy. YOu fly around doing missions for your goverment and a shadowy behinds the sence's department codenamed "Sigma". It rocks cause the pysicss are perfect, so you can fly your ship side's, turn on a dime and suddenly be going BACK wards. Also their are none of those wimpy SHIELDS! On the harder difficulty mode's you get one or two hits, depending on where the shot lands and then your suddenly wealcomed to a face full of vacume. Ill put up a link to some screen shots!

(the fighters are Starfury's by the way)

(this one has a great shot of a Starfury AND a Hevy Crusier)

Now to downlode the game Go here:

well, I Found Her isn't exactly open source, although freeware. Apparently the game is based on a commercial engine (released in Russia too), so I guess the authors can't release the source? Anyways, very impressive game definitely. Now if they can just come out with the main campaign....
