http://spring.clan-sy.com/wiki/Simple_Mod_Tutorial - skip to step 6 and ignore all the stuff it says about "Don't USE 3DO's Because They are STINKY"... the tutorial also doesn't cover scripting or weapons or anything so your unit will (at best), just move around like your dragging it around on a wagon... If anyone finds a really good scripting tutorial feel free to update the document.

Well you should ask the original author for permission first (that'd be minion) and... take a C course before you do any scripting.

Look at existing mods for the general structure where goes what.
