My advice: just put up the model and skin, with an appropriate license (CC-SA, Public Domain, GPL, or whatever suits you).

While I don't think this would fit well with anything in PURE (my current game) it will almost certainly get picked up by somebody. I wouldn't worry overmuch about trying to keep the crowd happy, there are always aesthetic arguments and counter-arguments around here, and the hard-core fans of OTA are, as people have pointed out, almost impossible to please- keep it blocky and somewhat ugly, like the original game, and people ask you to modernize it and make it pretty... add modern features (like, oh, rounded surfaces, omg) and people get upset, because you're screwing around with the angularity that is so striking about the ultra-low-polycount stuff in OTA. The only sure-fire, please-just-about-everybody "winners" are more-or-less direct rips from the intro movies, but even those require some interpretation in most cases. You're the professional artist- trust your judgement!

So put it out, so it can get used- it's a pretty model, no need to see it go to waste, to please the madding crowd :-)

no true argh, people loved my morty and it was heavily stylized.

I think the panels are fine but they do not seem to have the heavy, stocky style of ta units. I am sure someone will find a use for it as it is a nice model.

Sorry Smoth, I wasn't meaning to imply that people's tastes are absolutes, or anything. Just that it's rather hard to please everybody, and personally, I think it'd be better if artists just got stuff done the way they liked, then posted up files for everybody to use, instead of endless arguments and calls for revision. More would get done that way, and I think artists would learn more from watching what happens when their work gets used ("what, we have to build it in pieces, so that it can be manipulated by BOS?") than by the endless backbiting and criticism that accompanies most tentative releases.

I'm almost tempted, frankly, to just offer hosting to anybody who wants to send me models, and maintain a thread...

I think we are derailing the thread a bit and request moderators give us a topic split so we can continue this conversation.

I concur argh but we have uf, so no hosting is needed(uf even has that handy search feature). Most of my work is released under the same attribution license so that is all pretty easy to deal with.

As far as the spring player base being picky wanks, I blow them off. If you look at the morty feedback, opinions were mixed but when released and people saw it in game proper they changed opinion. I always say do it and hang the rest. The community might not currently have a use for it but later they will.

I currently have my morty and my aircraft up on uf for people to grab. Both of which have been used so I am not worried :P.

UF is fine, my only consideration was organization into a thread, so that people can find it here on the Forum. I don't care where the stuff's hosted, so long as I know it's reliable, free, and is unlikely to disappear. My domain's been around for years, it costs almost nothing, and I am not ever likely to take it down- I never get close to my bandwidth cap, etc., so I'm a fairly safe bet, for stuff like this, but I have no problem with using Cuppie's bandwidth either.

we have threads for that. The modding resource thread and the feature resource thread are there for that purpose.

Yup, never please the crowd :) to many varying opinions, taste and styles.

Still when I get time will tidy up the mesh and upload, will have to search for a license (normally use EULA).

Perhaps someone should start a dedicated thread to only list all available, completed* 3d Unit public content.

Problem with general resource threads is they tend to be massive :) and pages on pages of nothing.
