We need a tutorial

Post by RavingManiac »

Could someone come up with a good tutorial for the OTA mods? Right now, it is very hard for newbies to pick up the game. The tutorial should be able to teach newbies how to:
1. Download mods/maps.
2. Build a basic econ at the start of a Spring game.
3. Use D-gun.
4. Assist factories.
5. Use air transports.
6. NOT combomb/ comnap.
7. Successfully tech to T2.
8. Use metal makers and metal maker AI

The tut should simulate an enemy comnap and teach players how to prevent one.

A comnap is the abduction of enemy commanders using an air transport, after which the comnapper will usually self-destruct the transport over an enemy base, annihilating both the base and the com.

I belive there are many tutorials out there....not to mention the Wiki.
Also I had this idea of making tutorials as a replay. You could show all the important mechanics ingame and comment with chat/markers

I offer it to new players every time I'm approached for help. They all find it very useful.

They should include the link in the Spring client Topic.

Writen tutorials are fine, but some sort of played tutorial like the one of other games would be really good. Any good-hearted programmer whilling to do it? :)

In topic 6 people should instead be teached how to avoid comnaping and how to combomb decently.

The problem is not the lack of a tutorial. We need to integrate a tutorail into the lobby. That would asure noobs will have an easy option to teach themselves the basic concepts and the more advanced ones as well. When you install the client and enter the lobby you should be asked wether you want to see the tutorial. If you answer no it will ask you if you want to be asked about it again. If you click no a message pops out saying where you can manually enter the tutorial(within the lobby of course).

The tutorai lmust be interesting and include pictures or maybe even make it ingame or something..like a replay with popups and pauses..the tutorai lshould not only explain basic stuff but for those that desire it advanced tactics as well and show some common complex situations and how to resolve them. The tutorial should be divide into a few sections that can be run automaticly one after the other or each section seperatly as well..
and if u decide to run it all after each section you will be asked if you want to see the next section or skip it.you should also have the possibility to easily see a list of all sections and at any time jump to one of them.

Nobody would read a written tutorial.

Nobody is willing to make a playing tutorial, and thats 90% mod specific anyway.

I'd be willing to write BA theory guides, but it wouldn't be a fundamental tutorial, it would be focused on bringing a new player who has the basics of control and unit knowledge down, to the point where they have a high level of mastery in terms of unit and economic usage.
